Risks of Weight Loss Surgery Abroad
Risks of Weight Loss Surgery Abroad. It’s often said that if you ‘Buy Cheap, you will Buy Twice’. It is another way of saying that the least expensive option may not be the best choice in the long run. With regard to the ever-growing interest in ‘Health Tourism’, especially those considering travelling abroad to have Bariatric Surgery, such as having a Gastric Band fitted, or a Gastric Sleeve procedure, going for the cheapest option is seldom the wisest decision.
The least expensive choice can sometimes develop into the opposite, quickly becoming the most expensive. Also, of course, it is your health, and possibly your life, that is at stake. If you are looking for low-cost weight loss surgery abroad, then going for the least expensive option may not always be wise. We also have an interesting post about “The cost of obesity”
Hospitals and surgeons in many countries offer less expensive treatment than you can find at home. The availability normally comes with very short, or even non-existent, waiting times. That is one factor that should ring a few alarm bells. You may find our page: “Cheapest Bariatric Surgery” interesting too.
The growing popularity of medical tourism has resulted in more than half of all weight loss surgeries being undertaken abroad. The surgery abroad is viewed as being less expensive and available at quite short notice. Another factor that influences potential patients is that many overseas facilities appear to be more flexible with regard to the required weight or BMI of the proposed patient. Another concern.
It was recently published that prices for the three more common procedures, Gastric Band, Sleeve and Bypass, could be up to 50% less expensive when completed abroad. Further increasing the flow of interested overweight people to take up the option. You may also like to read our dedicated page: “5 Reasons to Try a Diet Before Weight-Loss Surgery.”

Over fifteen years ago, we (Martin and Marion Shirran) developed the psychology-focused Permanent Weight Loss Treatment, the Gastric Mind Band. Since then, we have written two bestselling books on the subject.

Over the last fifteen years, we have worked with hundreds of clients who were thinking of ‘Going under the Knife’ and then changed their minds at the last minute. We have also worked with others who went ahead and had the surgery, with some very unpleasant experiences. We have another page: “NHS weight-loss surgery”
Having a Gastric Band fitted has become a popular solution for those wishing to lose weight. Many view the procedure as an easy and fast option, quickly restoring their body image and self-confidence. However, the biggest surprise to us was that, for some reason, many were under the impression that the treatment would deliver a guaranteed weight loss. Please also read our dedicated page: “Everything you need to know about gastric bands”
An additional surprise was that they believed that any weight loss achieved would somehow be permanent. They thought that dieting and being watchful of what they were eating would be over. It takes only a few minutes to take a look around the pages of Google to see that is certainly not the case. Please also check out our page: “Alternatives to gastric sleeve surgery”
Prior to any surgical procedure, it is vital to undertake a little research. And when a person is obese and thinking about having surgery abroad, it is even more so. The risk of mortality (Death) either during or following surgery is considerably higher than for a person of normal weight. Surgery for those who are overweight has elevated risks around post-operative complications, such as sepsis, blood clots, etc.
Another factor that is often overlooked is related to flying following surgery. It’s true that for many people, the trip will be non-problematic. However, it’s advisable to give it consideration ahead of travelling. One of the concerns around flying post-surgery is that of Deep Vein Thrombosis. Being obese and having a high BMI are both risk factors for developing DVT. But, of course, the risk is increased following surgery and a general anaesthetic. From – www.healthline.com
Knowing just what post-surgery care you may require is another very important consideration. We have met clients who have undergone what appeared to be successful surgery. Sadly, however, they went on to develop problems, such as serious infections, stomach ulcers and internal leakage in the weeks following surgery. Difficulties can then occur when trying to source the required medical care in your home country, which, of course, can be more stressful in an emergency situation.
The BBC covered a story about a patient who completed the treatment in Brussels. Following the negative post-op issues she experienced, she had to have the procedure reversed by the NHS. See the link at the bottom of this page. Risks of Weight Loss Surgery Abroad.
The waiting list for weight loss surgery on the NHS can be up to two years, resulting in a growing interest in medical tourism. As we said earlier, undertaking the treatment abroad is less expensive, at least initially. The most popular destinations include Egypt and Turkey. For those prepared to travel further afield, both India and Mexico offer a number of procedures at competitive prices.
Weight loss surgery abroad is not for the faint-hearted! If you are considering it, it’s important to learn about the risks and benefits before deciding. It’s also vital that you talk to your doctor, and maybe to a nutritionist or health counsellor, ahead of making your final decision.
One final personal observation. Having spent time with a number of clients following their bariatric surgery, it becomes obvious that their life was changed forever. Following either a gastric sleeve or bypass procedure, both irreversible, things in life change, like celebratory Christmas meals or fun holidays. Because everything will be very different, in my opinion, at least, I believe that your partner and close family members should be involved in the decision to go ahead with the surgery. It will be life-changing and not always in the way you think…Especially as it is not necessary….
Be Careful
So, if weight loss surgery does not provide guaranteed results, and if it often leaves the patient having to be ‘diet’ aware for the rest of their lives, and additionally, if undertaken privately requires an investment of thousands of pounds, why do it….? For those that do elect to go for the surgery, you need to be aware of Weight Loss Creep, or Regain, normally following surgery. You can read about Reversing or Stopping Weight Creep here.
