Reverse or Stop Weight Creep

Reverse or Stop Weight Creep. That is Weight Creep? Can it be stopped, or better still, can it be reversed? On this page, you will find out everything you need to know about how to stop and reverse ‘ WEIGHT CREEP’. But what do we know, you may think? That is a fair enough question. As you will read at the bottom of the page, we have over 15,000 1:1 clinical treatment hours experience, and we would like to help you.

Reverse or Stop Weight Creep. So, just what is ‘Weight Creep’? It’s a phrase often used among people who have undergone bariatric surgery. Gastric bands, sleeves, or Bypasses are the more well-known interventions. The term ‘Weight Creep’, in that instance, relates to the slow, but often consistent, regaining of weight following the patient’s post-surgery weight loss. Many people who have undergone weight loss surgery, including irreversible procedures, are surprised when the weight slowly starts to return. They believed that surgical weight loss was permanent, which, of course, is not the case.

My Weigh Less Surgery Stories - Reverse or Stop Weight Creep

The term Weight Creep is also used more generally by people over the age of 55, who start to notice a slow but gradual increase in their weight. They are often alarmed, as their diet, at least in their mind, has stayed consistent whilst their weight has increased.

As most people are only too aware, the act of gaining weight can be a very difficult one to reverse. The problem of ‘weight creep’ is made considerably worse when you don’t have any idea when it started or, in fact, where it came from. On this page, we will try to explain some of the more common reasons for ‘weight creep’ in those over 55 years of age, and we will also explain a little about the role of Weight Creep following bariatric surgery. Finally, we will offer you a few tips on how you can reverse the situation, ensuring that going forward, it remains firmly under your control. Reverse or Stop Weight Creep.

The average unaware fifty-five year plus individual will gain between 1.1 and 2.2 pounds per year, according to the ‘Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’. In the majority of cases, this modest weight gain will ultimately manifest itself as obesity, resulting in a growing number of medical conditions. In fact, research indicates that a total weight gain in mid-life of around 12 pounds increases the likelihood of a person suffering from a number of chronic diseases, including but not limited to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and non-traumatic death.

The good news is that midlife ‘weight creep’ can be controlled and reversed. It’s perfectly possible to stop weight gain and lose those extra pounds you have unknowingly gained. And you can achieve this by making a few small and relatively simple lifestyle changes. The interventions needed are small and need not impact a person’s lifestyle.

But first, it’s important to understand just where this excess weight has come from. What happened? How did you magically gain those 14 pounds without noticing? Many people only become aware of the weight gain when purchasing new clothes; guys notice that they need to move up to the next size waist measurement, and women find they have to move up to the next clothes size. Then, in most cases, the alarm bells start to ring.

Reverse or Stop Weight Creep

Why does this happen? As we age, our metabolism undergoes a natural deceleration, leading to the phenomenon known as weight creep. This gradual weight gain is often attributed to a combination of factors, including a decline in muscle mass, hormonal changes, and a tendency for decreased physical activity. The reduction in muscle mass means that the body burns fewer calories at rest, making it easier to accumulate excess weight. Additionally, hormonal shifts, such as decreases in estrogen and testosterone, can contribute to changes in fat distribution. Combating weight creep necessitates a balanced approach, encompassing a healthy diet, some gentle exercise, and a few lifestyle adjustments to accommodate the evolving needs of an ageing metabolism.

One of the reasons for the pandemic we call obesity is attributed to the recently described ‘Obesogenic Society’ that we find ourselves living in. What is it? It is almost a society of our own making, one where food, particularly energy-dense, high-carbohydrate, low-quality food, is available 24/7. Add into the mix the fact that physical activity is in a continual decline, occasionally restricted and not always because of individual choice.

Reverse or Stop Weight Creep

Reverse or Stop Weight Creep

Everyone is placing pressure on physical activity. Society and government, sometimes without being aware, are playing their part in reducing energy expenditure. For example, have you seen anyone carrying a suitcase in the last five years? No, now they have wheels.? Do you know anyone who gets up during the evening to change the channel on the TV? How about getting up to answer the phone? They have the mobile on the sofa beside them, small silly examples, maybe? Place these situations together, mix them up a bit, and you will create an almost perfect start to an ‘Obesity Tsunami’. The Obesogenic society, of course, may well have an elevated effect on those of 55+.

Our Diet is not helping.

In a similar way to Cocaine, Heroin and other addictive substances, it is now firmly established that foods high in carbohydrates and sugars trigger the release of positive, feel-good chemicals in the brain similar to dopamine. Just like those using drugs, after a person has experienced the highly pleasurable feeling of consuming high energy-dense foods, the brain starts to crave ever more. Left unchecked, the level of desire for carbohydrate foods will become dominant.

Reverse or Stop Weight Creep

Many people experience similar cravings to those of a drug addict when consuming ‘junk food’. It appears that junk food triggers identical reward pathways in the brain, which can lead to a full-blown addiction. It is possible that as we age and move past 55, our ability to control urges becomes diminished, making it harder for us to resist.

And, of course, don’t forget that the diet industry also plays its part in the problem of ‘Weight Creep’. The “Global Weight Loss Products and Services Market 2021-2026” report came out recently. It stated that: “The global market for weight loss products and services should grow from $254.9 billion in 2021 to reach $377.3 billion by 2026. It is almost unbelievable just how much the multi-billion industry grows every single year. Selling a product with a stated failure rate in excess of 98 per cent.

Reverse or Stop Weight Creep

So, it continues its non-stop growth whilst having an openly disclosed failure rate in excess of 95%. And yet, people just carry on buying into it! Interestingly, at almost the same rate of growth as the diet industry is the unchallenged growth in global obesity. It is not rocket science; whatever information the public is being fed just does not work. They, the diet industry, are getting richer, whilst the public is becoming poorer and fatter. It’s sad, but true.Reverse or Stop Weight Creep.

There are a few reasons why our weight increases with age, such as the fact that as we grow older, our body changes. We all slow down as we get older. The changes may be minimal and often pass by unnoticed. Everyone’s body composition changes as we age; calorie-burning muscle is almost effortlessly replaced with sluggish fat. As we age, we naturally reduce our general activity level, in just a moderate way, whilst continuing to eat as we always had. The result, of course, is ‘Weight Creep’.

Reverse or Stop Weight Creep

So how slow is the onset of ‘Weight Creep’ that continues to catch out millions of those in midlife? Research indicates the average weight gain is around two pounds a year so that probably goes somewhere towards answering the question. Two pounds of annual gained weight can be described as the excess consumption of 7,000 calories. That, of course, comes down to just 20 calories per day. What does that look like? Well, a few slices of cucumber would do it. A small tomato with dinner will also deliver the result. A beer will give you one whole week’s worth of extra calories, as would a glass of wine.

On the energy expenditure side of the equation, occasionally taking the lift when in the past you used the stairs. Watching a film on Netflix instead of being involved in a sport is another example of burning fewer calories. I read about a guy in the US whose only change in lifestyle was taking his car to the car wash on Saturdays instead of doing it himself as usual. His weight gain over five years was precisely eleven pounds.

Post Surgery creep

Following bariatric surgery, weight creep can be mitigated by incorporating psychological interventions like the Oxford Therapeutics My Weigh Less programme. While the surgery itself provides a powerful tool for rapid weight loss, sustaining these results will require addressing underlying behavioural patterns. Oxford Therapeutics, focusing on cognitive and emotional aspects, aids in fostering a positive relationship with food, promoting mindfulness, and reinforcing healthier habits.

This psychological approach complements the physiological changes induced by surgery, significantly reducing the likelihood of weight regain. By combining the physical impact of bariatric surgery with the psychological reset, individuals can enhance their long-term success, fostering a holistic approach to weight management and overall well-being.

For individuals over 55, maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for overall well-being. Emphasising a well-balanced diet with a focus on nutrient-dense foods can help manage weight effectively. Incorporating regular physical activity, considering age-appropriate exercises like walking, swimming, or yoga, is essential for maintaining muscle mass and preventing weight gain. Additionally, being mindful of portion sizes and eating habits whilst addressing emotional triggers for overeating can contribute to weight management. Seeking support from weight loss specialists with programs tailored for older adults can provide vital support. Our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’ for those wishing to lose weight. The programme incorporates an updated version of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, TCBT, which is the subject of our bestselling book, published globally by Hay House. Professor Windy Dryden of Goldsmiths University in London endorsed the book, and Professor Philip Zimbardo of Stanford University in the USA wrote the foreword. We also incorporate the latest developments around Neuroplasticity and Neuro-Linguistic Programming along with many other disciplines. One component of our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’. At this statement, ‘Psychological Reset,’ we have observed many people raising their eyebrows; see below.

Reverse or Stop Weight Creep

Let me give you a couple of examples: the programme will allow you to make a number of simple cognitive changes in your thought processes…small changes that deliver ‘massive results’. For example, think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”?

The result: imagine you are out having dinner with friends, ordering a burger. Instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you ‘want’ fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you ‘need’ fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. Later, maybe the waiter says, do you ‘want’ another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you ‘need’ another glass of wine. You can watch an animated video explaining ‘Want and Need’ and how it works at the bottom of this page.

Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when the last time you ate was in response to actual, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…Reverse or Stop Weight Creep.
