Weight loss surgery has become a popular solution for those wishing to lose weight. Women, in particular, see the procedure as an easy and fast option to restore their body image and self-confidence. Of the many people we have spoken to who were considering the procedure, the biggest surprise to us was just how many, for some reason, believed that bariatric surgery delivered permanent results. It is vital that, ahead of paying considerable amounts of money abroad, patients are made fully aware that the results achieved are often far from permanent. An even bigger surprise to us was that they were under the impression that any weight loss results achieved would somehow be permanent. They were under the impression that the days of dieting and being watchful of what they were eating would be over. That, of course, is not the case, but when you question them as to where they obtained that vital piece of information, they are often not sure. Often, people are looking for a quick fix, so it could be a toss-up between “Slimfast or Surgery!“

Before undertaking any type of surgical procedure, it is vital that you conduct a little research. Of course, doing so when you are obese with the associated risks is even more critical. For an obese person, the risks of mortality (Death), either during or following a general anaesthetic, are elevated. Some studies show the risk of death is up to five times greater than for people of an average weight or BMI. Another issue to consider is that flying shortly after surgery is not recommended, as it comes with additional risks. So, flying home soon after your surgery is maybe not a good idea. It’s true that for many people, the trip will be non-problematic. However, it’s advisable to give it careful consideration before deciding to undertake surgery abroad, thinking it is safe to fly home a few days later. One of the main risks of flying post-surgery is that of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Being obese and having a high BMI are both additional risk factors for developing DVT, regardless of whether you have had surgery or not. Post-surgery care is another very important consideration. We have met a number of clients who have undergone what initially appeared to be successful weight-loss surgery. Sadly, however, they went on to develop problems, such as serious wound infections, shortly after returning home.
