I suffered with obesity for fifty years, and then I was enrolled as a trial candidate for our own weight loss programme. That resulted in me going on to lose 84 pounds and arriving at my target weight. I was not, however, the biggest loser. They all wanted to talk about her weight loss and her second wedding, which resulted in us becoming so popular in the pre-wedding weight-loss arena. It is unfortunate that the pressure to lose weight is always piqued at the wedding planning phase of their lives. In fact, weight loss for brides is one of the top searches on Google. But just how popular is it? Well, a Cornell University study a few years ago concluded that an incredible 70% of brides were each aiming to lose an average of 20 pounds ahead of the big day! A UK website puts the number at a more conservative 40%. But either way, it’s still an awfully large number of women striving to achieve the elusive ‘Body Beautiful’!
The pressure from society in general to look good and maintain a healthy weight is ever-growing. But, it seems that for many, looking their absolute best on their wedding day, when standing before their many friends and family, is paramount. And maybe it is understandable: the financial costs of a wedding, the fact that the photos will be in pride of place in the home for years to come, plus, of course, the dreams of looking wonderful on the beach for the honeymoon, all ‘up the ante’.
Many brides we have worked with just wanted to shed a few pounds, dropping a clothes size; for others, the situation is a little more demanding, needing to lose a considerable amount of weight. Katie, below, lost over 100 pounds following her treatment. The pressure is never-ending, regardless of whether you are planning your big day or maybe just considering the next beach holiday.
Sadly, however, many brides-to-be leave it just too late. They contact us saying: “I need to lose 40 pounds for my wedding in 3 months’ time. Can you help?”. The answer, of course, is probably a ‘No!’ But we can, of course, get them somewhere towards it, maybe between 24 and 30 pounds. We are good at what we do, but sadly, we are not miracle workers. Let me give you a couple of examples: the programme will allow you to make a number of simple cognitive changes in your thought processes…small changes that deliver ‘massive results’. For example, think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”?
The result: imagine you are out having dinner with friends, ordering a burger. Instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you ‘want’ fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you ‘need’ fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. Later, maybe the waiter says, do you ‘want’ another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you ‘need’ another glass of wine. Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when was the last time you ate in response to actual, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…
