It’s not uncommon to see racehorses wearing blinkers.  Apparently, the reason is to stop, or reduce them seeing, either behind them, or from being distracted by what’s going on beside them. Their vision is restricted to see only what’s ahead…in front of their eyes… And maybe overweight people wear blinkers too… Do you think before you eat? Maybe you never look back at past events, or experiences, especially with regard to your weight-loss endeavours.

You don’t have to look very far to find a new story in the global media about the pandemic of obesity.  A week seldom goes by without an article appearing in the press, or on the TV, regarding a new weight loss approach. These articles usually promise to deliver utopia for the dieter, the answer to their dreams; that is, of course, fast, weight loss. No dieting or exercise required; just watch Netflix and get slim.

That is what made me think about those trying to lose weight wearing blinkers. The diet industry is worth well over $250 billion, and it grows every year. The problem of obesity also grows every year. So, it must mean that whatever information we are being fed just does not work. They get richer; we get fatter. It’s sad, but true. The blinkers need to be removed. Those who have tried various diet regimes in the past that proved to be unsuccessful, need to remove the blinkers, look back and learn from past events, rather than to continue repeating the same mistakes. There are exciting, new, science-based interventions available now. They are proven to deliver positive results that do not involve surgery, or you buying into an almost lifelong, boring, “meal replacement lifestyle.”

Over recent years, a range of psychological-based approaches, aimed at tackling obesity, have been successfully formulated. One of these methods is based around the well-documented and researched Time Perspective Theories (TPT), as developed by Professor Philip Zimbardo and his team at Stanford University, in San Francisco.

The second development is the new, Neuroplasticity research, which has progressed with the advances in brain-imaging technology. It has confirmed and changed our belief around two things. Firstly, that our brains never stop growing. Secondly, and maybe more importantly, our brains can adapt and continually change. We now know that you really can learn to think and behave differently, regardless of your age. In effect, your brain can be reprogrammed. That is what the Shirrans have been saying and doing for ten years!

How’s Your Time Perspective?

Without wishing to go into too much depth, Zimbardo’s TPT is based on the in-depth understanding and importance of a person’s perspective of time. And also how this dramatically affects their daily lives. Every choice, or decision, we make is determined by our perception of time. And often this happens without us even being aware of it.  As Professor Zimbardo says in his book, time gives us direction and depth in our lives. And, if we’re aware of it, we can use it to better our health, for example, if we so wish.

Consider the Past, Present and Future

Let me try and give you an example… A person is considering driving their car home, after having one more alcoholic drink that they probably should have refused. They instinctively know they are over the drink drive limit. So, what should they do? If that person has a healthy ‘Time Perspective’, they will consider Past, Present and Future perspectives of time.

Consequently, they stop, maybe just for a fraction of a second, and probably without them even being aware they are doing it. At the same time, they consider the consequences on their life and that of their family, if they go ahead and drive home. What if they were involved in an accident, for instance?

So, in a nanosecond, they mentally run through the potential effect on their income, if they were to lose their licence. And they recall past stories of friends who have been caught, and then regretted their decision. Then they make a more informed decision, based on their unbiased perspective of time. And all because they considered all the possible times perspectives: past, present and future.

Zimbardo’s Time Perspective Theory also pairs up well with the latest scientific research and understanding in the field of Neuroplasticity (NP). As a result, when combined together, they may deliver a radical new approach in the weight loss arena. We did considerable research of our own, with information gathered from hundreds of Gastric Mind Band, weight-loss clients. It concluded that the majority had a biased perspective of time around food issues. We found that, in the majority of instances, they were wearing blinkers. Consequently, their time perspective, with regard to food consumption, was biased, and very narrow, focused almost exclusively on the here and now. In other words, they were ‘Present Hedonistic,’ with regard to excessive food consumption. So, they wanted the pleasure of food, and they wanted it now, without ever considering the longer-term consequences.

Tip No. 2 – Use a Smaller Plate!

You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. No doubt you know about the power of optical illusions. But are you aware of just how much more generous the same size portion of food appears, when presented on a smaller plate, instead of a larger one? Have a look at the image below. It’s known as the Delboeuf optical illusion. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.

Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!

Reduce Your Calorie Intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, consumed, on average, around 20% less food than previously. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.

Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!

A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!

Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!

It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.

Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!

You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”!

However, our advice is to eat your favourite things first. Not only will you enjoy it more, but it’s also much easier to stop when you’ve eaten just the right amount and leave the rest on the plate.
