The Skinny Switch, sometimes called Diet Secrets. It’s a funny title for a page, don’t you think? But, after fifteen years, and having treated well over a thousand overweight clients, I really believe it exists, at least in some form. I am confident it is one of the traits adopted, maybe unknowingly, by those almost ‘God-like’ people, who stay naturally thin, regardless of what goes in their mouths. I was attending a Psychology Conference at Warsaw University when I first heard a presentation about it, and it piqued my interest, it may have the same effect on you.
Where is Your Default Switch Set?
If you read any of the hundreds of articles about French Women, and how they maintain their weight, you may observe some parallels. So, let me try to explain what I mean about your ‘Default Switch’. Then, if that grabs your imagination, I will go on and give you a few pointers on how you can go about changing yours. Not from On to Off, but changing it from a Yes to a No! So, my guess is that, if you are struggling to lose weight, then it is possible your Default Switch could well be stuck in the ‘Yes’ position, and that is certainly not where you want it to be. It is a Diet Secrets.

Firstly, let me just say that changing your psychological default switch from one position to the other does requires a certain amount of both effort and energy. That in itself is half the problem, it is why more people don’t do it. So, as an example, let’s imagine you’re on a diet. It’s important to you, this time you are making a real effort to succeed. Then a group of friends call to say they are going out to your favourite restaurant. They really want you to join them, and because you know the food and wine will be amazing, as will the company. Do you say Yes or No?

Just Dream for a Moment
Just relax and daydream for a few minutes, what would it be like to be completely 100% in control. To effortlessly say No whenever you wanted, without even having to think about it. For the first time in your life, you start to think about yourself and what you want instead of pleasing others. So, instead of saying Yes and giving in to every request, you just stopped, and selected whichever option served your best interests. Does it sound like a dream? No, it’s just about flipping your default switch.

Your switch has probably been stuck in the Yes Position for many years. So, what’s it like living a life in a permanent Yes phase? Well, itโs like this, “Martin, do you want to come out tonight? Yes! Do you want a pizza? Yes! Do you fancy a glass of wine? Yes, in fact I’ll have two! Martin, how about going away for a weekend? Yes! It was always Yes. Because Yes was my default switch. It never needed any thinking about, it was automatic, it was painless, it was easy, just say Yes to everything. Martin was always up for fun, and pleasing other people.

Then, after hearing the university presentation, I decided to have a go, to make a change in my life. I wanted to see what it would be like, to live with No as my default setting instead of Yes. To be honest, at the start it required more effort than I had anticipated. To make the change and to mentally flip the switch to the No position, to make No my new default setting permanent was exhausting. It is harder than it sounds, but you can do it, the result will blow you away. Now whenever anyone asks me something, I would in most cases just automatically say No Thank You. Then they, or I, had to work very hard to get it to a Yes. As a result it took the pressure away, in fact it often put the pressure on them.

Whilst flipping the switch needs a lot of effort, that is also a positive, as once you have re-positioned it, it takes a lot of effort to flip it back again. But be careful, you may become someone your friends describe as boring, always saying no. However, if that is what it takes, even temporarily, for you to achieve your target weight, then maybe, just maybe, that’s OK. Most French women seem to be able to control their weight, almost effortlessly. They often do what is best for them: ‘will saying yes, take me closer to my goal, or move me further away?’.

Whilst changing the position of my Default Switch helped me on my weight loss journey, it also changed many other facets of my life. I find that I think about myself a little more now. Before, if I had decided to have a few nights in and catch up on my sleep, and just chill, I would often find myself just giving in, as soon as someone invited us out. If anyone asked me to take on some extra work, I used to say Yes! Whereas now I think about the consequences, and make a more considered decision.

Changing your Default setting from Yes to No will serve you well in many areas of your life. So, make sure you commit to changing the default to where you want it to be. Try it; like I say, it takes more effort than you may think, but the results come very quickly. Once you have mastered it the whole thing becomes effortless. Give yourself seven days, you may be surprised. It will certainly allow you to take decisions that benefit you, and take you on the route you want to follow, rather than always pleasing others. Tip No. 1 – Only Eat When You’re Hungry!
This has to be our number one, golden rule, when it comes to achieving successful weight loss. In our experience, most overweight people eat for many different reasons, other than physical hunger. But, if you allow your emotions to control your eating habits, then it is unlikely that you will be able to control your weight as a result. So, before you reach for anything to eat, stop and ask yourself first if you physically NEED to eat, or you just WANT to…
Tip No. 2 – Use a Smaller Plate!
You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. Remember the famous Delboeuf optical illusion, because a small portion of food looks more generous when served on a smaller size plate. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.
Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!
Reduce Your Calorie Intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, consumed, on average, around 20% less food than previously. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.
Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!
A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!
Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!
It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.

Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!
You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”!
However, our advice is to eat your favourite things first. Not only will you enjoy it more, but it’s also much easier to stop when you’ve eaten just the right amount and leave the rest on the plate.
