Lose Weight Quickly and Healthily? What method should I use? Do I need to exercise? We are aware that many people have a strong dislike for exercise and attending the gym. There are, of course, many different methods and approaches that you can adopt to help you on your weight-loss journey. The main criteria for most people is that they want to lose weight quickly and healthily, which most people would agree is fair enough. It would also be a good idea if the weight loss were Permanent.

Sure, you can include a little exercise, but only if you want to. In reality, exercise will have a minimal effect on your weight loss outcome anyway. The notion that exercise is not necessary for weight loss has gained attention recently, highlighting the pivotal role of dietary choices. While exercise undeniably offers numerous health benefits, its impact on weight loss is often overemphasised. Here’s a more comprehensive exploration of why exercise may not be considered a necessity for weight loss:

Lose Weight Quickly and Healthily?

Caloric Imbalance Primarily Depends on Diet: Weight loss fundamentally relies on maintaining a caloric imbalance—burning more calories than you consume. Dietary choices play a more substantial role in controlling caloric intake through mindful eating than relying solely on burning calories through exercise. The adage ‘you can’t outrun a bad diet’ holds true. No amount of exercise can fully compensate for an unhealthy diet high in processed foods, sugars, and excessive calories. Sustainable weight loss necessitates a comprehensive approach, including both dietary changes and, if desired, exercise.

Potential for Overcompensation: Some individuals engaging in exercise might unintentionally overcompensate by consuming more calories, thinking they’ve “earned” extra indulgences. This phenomenon can counteract the calorie deficit needed for weight loss. Prioritising the quality of your diet by choosing nutrient-dense, whole foods is crucial. A well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains not only aids in weight loss but also promotes overall health.

Weight Loss is 80% Diet, 20% Exercise: While the specific percentages may vary, the general sentiment that weight loss is predominantly influenced by diet is supported by many experts. Achieving a sustainable, healthy weight is more attainable when dietary habits are the primary focus. Also, of course, intense exercise may not be feasible for some individuals due to physical limitations, time constraints, or personal preferences. It’s essential to acknowledge alternative ways to achieve weight loss that align with your own lifestyle and preferences.

Dietary Changes Yield Quicker Results: Implementing dietary changes often leads to quicker and more noticeable weight loss results than relying solely on exercise. This immediacy can provide motivation and encourage adherence to healthier eating habits. For weight loss to be successful and sustainable, the chosen approach must be maintainable in the long run. While exercise plays a crucial role in overall health, it’s equally important to adopt dietary habits that can be sustained over time.

Lose Weight Quickly and Healthily?

In conclusion, while exercise remains a valuable component of a healthy lifestyle, the primary focus for effective and sustainable weight loss is often on making informed, balanced dietary choices. It’s advisable to consult with healthcare professionals or nutritionists to develop a personalised plan that aligns with individual health goals and preferences.

The majority of professionals in the weight-loss arena agree with us as consultants that the ‘Calories in, Calories out’ approach to weight loss was a bit of a curve ball. Rather embarrassingly, analysis indicates that in the 50+ years that this approach to weight loss has been recommended to patients by their doctors, it has had the opposite effect. And the level of obesity has skyrocketed. As a result, the so-called professionals were forced to go back to the drawing board, so to speak… (or maybe it’s the breadboard!!)

This paradigm shift signifies a necessary re-evaluation of weight-loss methodologies, prompting a departure from oversimplified calorie counting toward a more nuanced understanding of factors influencing body weight, metabolism, and overall health. This acknowledgement underscores the evolving nature of weight-loss guidance and the imperative to adapt strategies in response to long-term outcomes.

What do doctors know?

To be a registered doctor in the UK, a medical student would need to complete a five-year training programme. This is made up of four years at medical school and one, or possibly two, years of residency. That equates to around 9,500 hours of training in total. So, let us ask you a question: how many hours of medical training do you think is dedicated to diet and nutrition? Considering the connection of obesity with cancer, diabetes and, more recently, its effect on dementia, you would probably expect the training to be extensive.

However, inadequate nutrition education in medical school is commonly cited as an obstacle to the engagement of doctors with diet and weight-related interventions. In the UK, a recent study of 853 medical students and doctors found that during their five years of medical training, over 70% had received less than two hours of nutrition training while at medical school! We have another blog post about how to achieve fast, permanent weight loss.

Lose Weight Quickly and Healthily

We were designed as a species to be able to live through periods of feast and famine. When the seasons provided a plentiful supply of nutritious food, we consumed it as available, and our bodies converted any excess to fat. Fat is stored energy, which can be used at any time when there is a period of limited availability of food. That system, of course, worked perfectly until the regular periods of famine vanished, resulting in us permanently overindulging. The result? The global obesity pandemic we find ourselves living through today.

To harness this development to our advantage when trying to achieve weight loss, we can adopt strategies that mimic the conditions of scarcity that our ancestors faced. Intermittent fasting, for instance, introduces controlled periods of reduced caloric intake, allowing the body to dip into its fat reserves for energy, just as it was designed to do! By aligning our eating patterns with our evolutionary programming, we can encourage the utilisation of stored fat and promote weight loss.

Also, adopting a nutrient-dense, whole-foods-based diet aligns with our evolutionary biology. Consuming foods that are closer to what our ancestors ate—rich in natural, unprocessed nutrients—provides a balance that our bodies are predisposed to handle effectively. This approach not only supports weight loss but also contributes to overall health and well-being.

Maybe, just maybe, our ancestors held the key to overcoming obesity. Recognising and working with our evolutionary heritage provides a roadmap for effective weight management. By incorporating practices that align with our genetic predispositions—intermittent fasting, a nutrient-dense diet, and little gentle exercise—we can navigate the challenges of the modern food environment and promote a healthier balance between energy intake and expenditure. In doing so, we tap into the wisdom of our evolutionary past to address the contemporary health concerns of the present, the prevalence of obesity and the Obeasegenic Society.

One of the main reasons for the growing popularity of the low-carb approach is the undeniable fact that they find it so sustainable. On a low-carb diet, hunger sensations are significantly reduced, and the weekly weight loss is enough to motivate the dieter to continue. Limiting carbohydrates forces your body into a situation where it burns your fat stores for fuel. That is, after all, what fat stores are for.

A low-carbohydrate diet leads to a state where the body is running on ketones. In other words, the body burns its own fat reserves for energy rather than the food you are continually placing in your mouth. This process is known as ketosis and, in most people, will lead to a steady weight loss of between 1-2 pounds per week. There are several different ways to do a low-carbohydrate diet.

Low-Carb Diets are Not New

Low-carb diets are not new; they have been around for many years. It’s basically how our hunter-gatherer ancestors described above used to eat. It’s also very safe; There is no need for you to buy meal replacement bars, shakes, etc. Just adopt a healthy, nutritious approach to eating: eat real, unprocessed food, and watch your weight go down while your health improves. We have a dedicated page here that will explain everything you need to know about how to successfully adopt and live a low-carb lifestyle to maintain a healthy weight; follow this link.

But What are Carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are an essential part of the human diet, and they come in two forms: complex carbs and simple carbs. Complex carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy, and they are found in foods like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, breakfast cereals, fruit, and vegetables. Simple carbs are made up of single sugars, and they are found in foods like confectionery, syrup, honey, and jam.

The human body needs carbohydrates to function properly, but too many simple carbs will result in weight gain. A very low-carbohydrate diet is one of the most successful methods to achieve weight loss. Additionally, cutting out simple carbs helps to regulate blood sugar levels.

A growing number of experts now recommend that people who are trying to lose weight adopt a low-carbohydrate diet. A low carbohydrate diet to achieve weight loss can be defined as one that contains less than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. Many people find this easy to achieve and sustain over the longer term. In comparison, a typical Western diet often includes around 250-300g of carbohydrates! There is an ever-growing variety of low-carbohydrate foods available, and, with not too much planning, it is possible to consume a healthy and balanced diet that is low in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred source of energy, and when we eat them, they’re broken down into glucose, which is then used by our cells for energy. However, when we cut carbs from our diet, our bodies enter a state known as ketosis. In ketosis, our bodies begin to break down stored fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. This process not only helps us to lose weight but also has several other health benefits, including improved mental clarity and decreased inflammation. In addition, because ketosis causes our bodies to burn fat for energy, it can also help to reduce our risk of developing obesity-related diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

A low-carbohydrate diet is effective in helping people lose weight and improve their health. Experts believe that this type of diet can help to reduce the risk of developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic health conditions. While a low-carbohydrate diet may not be suitable for everyone, it is worth considering if you are looking to improve your health and lose weight.

Lose Weight Quickly and Healthily?

Let me give you a couple of examples: the programme will allow you to make a number of simple cognitive changes in your thought processes…small changes that deliver ‘massive results’. For example, think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”?

The result: imagine you are out having dinner with friends, ordering a burger. Instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you ‘want’ fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you ‘need’ fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. Later, maybe the waiter says, do you ‘want’ another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you ‘need’ another glass of wine. You can watch an animated video explaining ‘Want and Need’ and how it works at the bottom of this page.

Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when the last time you ate was in response to actual, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…
