The link between obesity and longevity
Maintaining a healthy weight is a crucial factor in preventing various chronic health conditions. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, certain cancers, and other life-threatening ailments. Additionally, carrying excess weight places additional strain on joints and bones. It is a fact that the majority of individuals presenting for hip or knee replacement surgery are obese.
Lose Weight, Live Longer
Studies have consistently shown that individuals who maintain a healthy weight are more likely to live longer and enjoy a higher quality of life. Weight loss, when achieved in a sensible manner, incorporating gentle exercise along with healthy lifestyle habits, can substantially reduce the risk of chronic diseases and extend one’s life span. You can also read a post discussing life span versus health span.
Why weight loss helps you live longer…
Reducing Chronic Disease Risk: Losing weight can positively impact heart health by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Weight loss also decreases the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, which is closely associated with obesity and sedentary lifestyles. A new, highly unusual technique which potentially improves a person’s health span is blood washing.

Improving Metabolism: Shedding extra pounds can enhance the body’s metabolism, making it more efficient in processing nutrients and burning calories. A healthier metabolism not only aids in weight management but also supports overall health and vitality. Kay Lindley above lost over 100 pounds and reversed her diabetes along the way using the My Weigh Less programme.
Lowering Inflammation: Obesity often leads to chronic inflammation, which contributes to the development of various diseases. Weight loss can decrease inflammation markers, thus reducing the risk of inflammatory conditions and promoting better overall health.
Enhancing Mobility: Excessive weight can strain joints and lead to mobility issues, decreasing one’s ability to engage in physical activities. Weight loss reduces the pressure on joints, promoting better mobility and increasing the likelihood of staying active in the long term.
Tips for Effective Weight Loss
Are you hungry? Do the ‘Brussels Sprout Test’, (or substitute for an alternative food you dislike). So before you start picking on something to eat, ask yourself: “Would I eat a bowl of Brussels sprouts right now?” If the answer is no, then find something else to fill your time instead of eating.
Ask the question… Are you eating because you are hungry, or are you eating because you are tired, sad, lonely, depressed, bored, stressed, or simply to please someone else? The majority of overweight individuals are seldom hungry; instead, they eat for psychological reasons. You can also read our post “Do I Have to be Overweight?”

Do you want it, or do you need it? It is at the centre of one of our sessions. We use several techniques overlaid with each other to lay the word Need over the term Want. Example: you are out at a restaurant with friends and order the New York Burger. The waiter says, “Do you want fries with that?” and you hear “Do you need fries with that?” It’s just a small change, but it produces a massive result.
Take a walk. A daily walk for around 30 minutes is enough to make a big difference. It will improve your mental outlook, aid digestion and generally have a very positive effect.
Mindful Eating: Pay attention to portion sizes and practice mindful eating. Listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. Always eat sitting down, stop snacking, never eat between meals, and try not to eat after 7:00 p.m.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, as it helps to control appetite and supports overall health.
Get enough sleep: Prioritise getting enough restorative sleep, as poor sleep patterns have been proven to increase obesity.
