This article explores what fatty liver disease is and how it impacts our health, and why diet may play a large role in how your liver functions. The liver is the largest internal organ in the body. So, fatty liver disease is not just an unpleasant side effect of diabetes, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. It causes inflammation, and can actually lead to serious consequences, such as cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis causes the death of liver tissue, which means you would require a transplant to stay alive.
The Causes of Fatty Liver Disease
Primary causes of fatty liver disease include obesity and lack of exercise, high triglycerides and cholesterol, along with poor blood sugar control. And of course, let’s not forget alcohol as a potential cause. Also, this may come as a surprise to you, but, contrary to popular belief, dietary fat is NOT the culprit in fatty liver disease, it’s actually SUGAR! The most important point to underline about the problem is that it arises from a sedentary lifestyle and poor nutrition habits, not from a physical ailment.
What is Fatty Liver Disease?
Fatty liver disease is the accumulation of fat in liver cells. When you have fatty liver disease, your bile can build up in your blood, leading to yellow discoloration on your skin and the whites of your eyes. Luckily, natural remedies are an effective way to combat fatty liver disease and return your liver to a healthy condition. These natural remedies include eating fewer carbs and more protein, drinking plenty of water every day, getting moderate exercise like walking on a daily basis (20 minutes minimum), and breaking some bad habits like overeating sugary foods.
Non Alcoholic Vs Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
Most people know fatty liver disease as a medical term. But what they may not realise is that there are two different types: non-alcoholic and alcoholic. Alcoholic fatty liver diseases is alcohol induced, as the name suggests. This condition affects those who drink with excess frequency, exceeding two units of alcohol per day for women and three units of alcohol per day for men. It can be asymptomatic, but it if is not, the sufferer might suffer from nausea, vomiting, bloating and loss of appetite.
On the other hand, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is not related to alcohol at all, but is mainly caused by poor diet and lack of exercise. If you’re obese or overweight, according to the NHS, then your risk of developing fatty liver disease is increased. Thought you’d avoid fatty liver just because you don’t drink alcohol? Well, think again! One of the most common symptoms is pain on the right side under the rib cage. Other symptoms include dark colored urine, yellowed skin, greasy stools, and an abnormal appetite or unexplained weight gain.
The Huge Problem of Obesity
A new research study published in the journal BMC Gastroenterology found that the number of people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has tripled between 2000 and 2010. NAFLD is now becoming one of the most prominent causes of liver disease worldwide. It’s not surprising that even more people are now at higher risk for conditions like type 2 diabetes, liver cancer and cardiovascular diseases – all of which are related to being overweight or obese! How long to Reverse Fatty Liver Disease
The length of time for reversing fatty liver disease is different for everyone. Factors such as other medical conditions, medications taken, and other lifestyle habits should be considered. The age, weight, diet, hours of exercise, and severity of the disease will all have an impact on the results. However, one thing remains constant – patience. There is no quick fix or magic pill that will get rid of your fatty liver disease. And avoid the following foods: refined sugars, sweets, white bread, pasta, desserts, carbonated sugary drinks, alcohol, trans fats/processed vegetable oils. Foods high in fibre are healthy because they are filling. High-fibre foods are found in fruits and vegetables.

Here are some dietary and lifestyle changes that may be able to help ease the symptoms of fatty liver disease:
1. Avoid sugary foods, and processed meats
2. Stop eating ultra-processed foods, which are high in trans fats
3. Increase consumption of soluble fibre, such as vegetables and fruits which can help control that unhealthy sweet tooth that beckons for you during times of stress.
4. Manage your stress levels
6. Limit alcohol and sugary drinks and drink plenty of water instead
7. Take steps to treat high cholesterol
8. Lose weight
9. Increase your physical activity
10. Follow a low carbohydrate diet, which includes plenty of healthy fats, fresh vegetables and a moderate amount of good quality protein.

Tip No. 1 – Only Eat When You’re Hungry!
This has to be our number one, golden rule, when it comes to achieving successful weight loss. In our experience, most overweight people eat for many different reasons, other than physical hunger. But, if you allow your emotions to control your eating habits, then it is unlikely that you will be able to control your weight as a result. So, before you reach for anything to eat, stop and ask yourself first if you physically NEED to eat, or you just WANT to…
Tip No. 2 – Use a Smaller Plate!
You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. Remember the famous Delboeuf optical illusion, because a small portion of food looks more generous when served on a smaller size plate. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.
Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!
Reduce Your Calorie Intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, consumed, on average, around 20% less food than previously. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.
Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!
A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!
Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!
It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.
Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!
You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”!
