Do I need exercise to lose weight
Lose Weight While Sitting On The Sofa… Maybe it’s Not A Dream
Do I need exercise to lose weight. If you’ve ever struggled to lose weight, no doubt you will have heard the advice to “Eat less and move more!” ad nausea m! The truth is, however, successful weight loss is a lot more to do with what you are eating than how much exercise you are doing. The winning formula is close to 80% what goes into your mouth and 20% how much you move.
This blog was written by Martin and Marion Shirran. Together they have thousands of hours of experience, using their unique therapy to successfully help people lose weight. We have an additional blog dedicated to weight gain during Covid that you may find of interest.
Do I Need Exercise to Lose Weight?
Do you hate exercise? That’s not a problem! To answer the question can I lose weight without exercise? Basically, yes you can! The even better news is that doing too much exercise can actually make it harder for you to lose weight. Shocking but true! Strenuous exercise puts your body into a state of stress, which leads you to store more fat. The My Weigh Less Treatment is particularly popular with wheelchair users.
Research has shown that prolonged, very high intensity exercise causes an increase in cortisol levels circulating in the blood. In contrast, low intensity exercise leads to a decrease. However, exercise does also stimulate the production of endorphins in the brain, which gives you the natural feel-good factor. Maybe you’re better off going for a leisurely stroll, rather than sweating it out in the gym…
Can I Lose Weight ‘With’ Exercise?
Even on the move, the human body is extremely energy efficient. Surprisingly, your body runs on the same amount of energy as a simple standard light bulb! So, you would have to run an incredible half marathon, just to burn the 1080 calories contained in a Big Mac Combo Meal!
You can’t outrun a bad diet!
Let’s compare your body to a car for a moment. A typical car gets between 15 and 30 miles to the gallon, and a gallon of petrol contains about 31,000 calories. So, if a human being could drink petrol instead of eating food, to take in calories, (not a pleasant thought!), they could run an amazing 300 miles on just one gallon of petrol!

In other words, the reality is that however much exercise you do, you can’t outrun a bad diet. Consequently, a person weighing 185 pounds would have to do a brisk 30-minute walk to burn off the number of calories in a small bag of Walker’s cheese and onion crisps. How could anyone be bothered to do this to try and lose weight? Exercise does of course help to overcome depression. We also have a dedicated blog post asking if obesity causes depression.
How About Paying Up Front!
One unusual idea is paying in advance. Basically, decide what you want to eat, it can be anything , then work out the number of calories it contains. Then, you pay up-front, by way of exercise. Afterwards, if you still want whatever it is, then you eat it. So, as an example, if a bar of chocolate contains 250 calories, before you eat it you must run up the stairs 42 times. Quite energy expensive then, don’t you think….?
So Can You Lose Weight Without Exercise
But it’s not all bad news about exercise. Research indicates that a pound of lean muscle burns 7-10 calories per day, whereas a pound of fat only burns 2–3 calories per day. Therefore, If you get rid of body fat, and replace it with muscle mass, it will help you to burn more calories, which might just make it a bit easier to lose weight too.
Watching Netflix all Day and Losing Weight
Yes you can watch Netflix and lose weight! So, you could sit down and binge watch the latest series on Netflix for 24 straight hours. During that time, with an average BMI, you would naturally burn around 1,600 calories. Therefore, if you didn’t eat a thing, but simply sat still, the next day you would have lost weight….. but only about six ounces!

Our Top Weight Loss Tips Don’t Involve Exercise!
Tip No. 1 – Only Eat When You’re Hungry!
This has to be our number one, golden rule, when it comes to achieving successful weight loss. In our experience, most overweight people eat for many different reasons, other than physical hunger. But, if you allow your emotions to control your eating habits, then it is unlikely that you will be able to control your weight as a result. So, before you reach for anything to eat, stop and ask yourself first if you physically NEED to eat, or you just WANT to…
Tip No. 2 – Use a Smaller Plate!
You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. No doubt you know about the power of optical illusions. But are you aware of just how much more generous the same size portion of food appears, when it’s arranged on a smaller plate, instead of a larger one? Have a look at the image below. It’s known as the Delboeuf optical illusion. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.
Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!
Reduce your calorie intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, consumed, on average, around 20% less food than previously. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.
Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!
A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!
Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!
It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.
Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!
You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”!
However, our advice is to eat your favourite things first. Not only will you enjoy it more, but it’s also much easier to stop when you’ve eaten just the right amount and leave the rest on the plate.
