Are Overweight People Wearing Blinkers?
It’s not uncommon to see racehorses wearing blinkers. Apparently, the reason is to stop or reduce them seeing, either behind them or from being distracted by what’s going on beside them. Their vision is restricted to see only what’s ahead…in front of their eyes… And maybe overweight people wear blinkers, too… Do you think before you eat? Maybe you never look back at past events or experiences, especially with regard to your weight-loss endeavours.
You don’t have to look very far to find a new story in the global media about the so-called pandemic of obesity. A week seldom goes by without an article appearing in the press or on the TV regarding a new weight loss approach. These articles usually promise to deliver utopia for the dieter, the answer to their dreams; that is, of course, fast, permanent effort-free weight loss. No dieting or exercise is required; just lay on the sofa, watch Netflix and get slim.
Take off the Blinkers
That is what made me think about those trying to lose weight wearing blinkers. The diet industry is worth well over $250 billion, and it grows every year. The problem of obesity also grows every year. So, it must mean that whatever information we are being fed just does not work. They get richer; we get fatter. It’s sad, but true. You may also like to read our blog post: “The Science of Psychology in Weight Loss.”
The blinkers need to be removed. Those who have tried various diet regimes in the past that proved to be unsuccessful need to remove the blinkers, look back and learn from past events rather than continue repeating the same mistakes. There are exciting, new, science-based interventions available now. They are proven to deliver positive results that do not involve surgery or you buying into an almost lifelong, boring “meal replacement lifestyle.”
Professor Philip Zimbardo and Psychology
Over recent years, a range of psychological-based approaches aimed at tackling obesity have been successfully formulated. One of these methods is based on the well-documented and researched Time Perspective Theories (TPT), as developed by Professor Philip Zimbardo and his team at Stanford University in San Francisco.
The second development is neuroplasticity research, which has progressed with advances in brain imaging technology. It has confirmed and changed our beliefs around two things. Firstly, that our brains never stop growing. Secondly, and maybe more importantly, our brains can adapt and continually change. We now know that you really can learn to think and behave differently, regardless of your age. In effect, your brain can be reprogrammed. That is what the Shirrans have been saying and doing for fifteen years!
Without wishing to go into too much depth, Professor Zimbardo’s TPT is based on the in-depth understanding and importance of a person’s perspective of time. And also how this dramatically affects their daily lives. Every choice or decision we make is determined by our perception of time. And often, this happens without us even being aware of it. As Professor Zimbardo says in his book, time gives us direction and depth in our lives. And, if we’re aware of it, we can use it to better our health, for example, if we so wish.
Consequences
Let me try and give you an example… A person is considering driving their car home after having one more alcoholic drink that they probably should have refused. They instinctively know they are over the drink-drive limit. So, what should they do? If that person has a healthy ‘Time Perspective’, they will consider Past, Present and Future perspectives of time.
Consequently, they stop, maybe just for a fraction of a second, and probably without them even being aware they are doing it. At the same time, they consider the consequences of the actions they are about to take. The effect on their life and that of their family if they go ahead and drive home. What if they were involved in an accident, for instance?
So, in a nanosecond, they mentally run through the potential effect on their income if they were to lose their licence. They think about the disappointment in the eyes of the children. And they recall past stories of friends who have been caught and then regretted their decision. Then, without knowing why, they make a more informed decision based on their unbiased perspective of time. And all because they considered all the possible times perspectives: past, present and future.
Zimbardo’s Time Perspective Theory also pairs well with the latest scientific research and understanding in the field of Neuroplasticity (NP). As a result, when combined together, they may deliver a radical new approach in the weight loss arena. Workaround for both of these elements is a key component of the My Weigh Less treatment, developed by Martin and Marion Shirran. Their unique, award-winning approach, featured in the media globally, was initially part of their clinic-based weight-loss treatment, the Gastric Mind Band.
Martin and Marion, along with Dr Sarah Clarke, were invited by Professor Zimbardo to present details of their work around treating obesity with a psychology focussed approach and weight loss at the 2nd Annual Psychology Conference at Warsaw University. Professor Zimbardo went on to write the foreword for their book on the subject published by Hay House.
Think Before You Eat
You don’t need to have an in-depth understanding or knowledge of the new advances in cognitive science to adopt these new developments. All you require is the willingness to be open-minded. Simply remove your blinkers and look through new, fresh lenses at the exciting, innovative approaches to weight loss that are coming over the horizon.
Weight-loss surgery, restrictive diets, and meal replacement regimes were all acceptable in the past. But now, it’s 2024, and things have moved on. You know, without any explanation, that if asked to answer the following question truthfully, your answer would be 100% yes! So, do you ever eat when you’re tired, sad, lonely, bored, depressed or maybe to please someone else? If you did answer yes, then you know, just as we do, that the issues around obesity are not physical but entirely psychological. And fortunately, that can be fixed. So we look forward to helping you. Think Before You Eat.
We did considerable research of our own, with information gathered from over a thousand Gastric Mind Band weight-loss clients. It concluded that the majority had a biased perspective of time around food issues. We found that, in the majority of instances, they were wearing blinkers. Consequently, their time perspective, with regard to food consumption, was biased and very narrow, focused almost exclusively on the here and now. In other words, they were ‘Present Hedonistic’ with regard to excessive food consumption. So, they wanted and demanded the pleasure of food, and they wanted it now without ever considering the longer-term consequences.
In Conclusion
The diet industry is thriving, worth over $250 billion, while the problem of obesity continues to grow. This disconnection between the solutions offered and the results achieved is a stark reality. It’s time to remove those blinkers and consider new, science-based interventions that offer a real chance at lasting change without the need for invasive surgeries or a lifetime of monotonous “meal replacement lifestyles.”
In recent years, psychology-focused approaches to combating obesity have taken centre stage. Professor Philip Zimbardo’s Time Perspective Theory (TPT) offers a profound understanding of how our perception of time influences our daily choices. TPT pairs seamlessly with the latest advancements in Neuroplasticity, which reveals that our brains can adapt and change regardless of age. This powerful combination opens doors to a revolutionary approach to weight loss, and it’s at the core is Oxford Therapeutics My Weigh Less programme developed by Martin and Marion Shirran. Their unique and award-winning approach has been featured globally and was initially part of the Gastric Mind Band.
You don’t need an in-depth understanding of cognitive science to embrace these innovative developments. All it takes is an open mind and the willingness to remove your blinkers. Look through fresh lenses at the exciting and practical approaches to weight loss emerging on the horizon.
Think Before You Eat
As we move forward into 2024, it’s time to leave behind the outdated weight loss methods and the physical vs. psychological debate. If you’ve ever eaten when tired, sad, lonely, bored, or to please someone else, you understand that the root of obesity is psychological. The good news is that psychological issues can be fixed. We’re here to guide you on this journey, helping you shed the blinkers and unlock the potential for lasting weight loss and well-being.

Think Before You Eat
Over a thousand people travelled from around the world to experience our weight-loss treatment. Our clients include celebrities, members of the public and medical professionals, including doctors, dentists, nurses, anaesthetists and consultant surgeons. Some clients simply want to shed their excess weight to look better. However, others tell us that health is the main reason. Many of our past clients have successfully reversed medical conditions such as insulin resistance, diabetes, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease, whereas others have managed to avoid having knee or hip replacement surgery. You may like to read more details on our Medical Endorsements page.
Our weight-loss approach has been the subject of continued research and development over the last thirteen years. Sharon, above, lost 75 pounds. Our youngest client was just fourteen, and the oldest was eighty-six. Some clients wished to lose just a few pounds to fit into their wedding dress. But others, like Sarah below, went on to lose over 140 pounds. As a result, she was featured globally on TV and in the press. Our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’ for those wishing to lose weight. The programme incorporates an updated version of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, TCBT, which is the subject of our bestselling book, published globally by Hay House. Professor Windy Dryden of Goldsmiths University in London endorsed the book, and Professor Philip Zimbardo of Stanford University in the USA wrote the foreword. We also incorporate the latest developments around Neuroplasticity and Neuro-Linguistic Programming along with many other disciplines. One component of our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’. At this statement, ‘Psychological Reset,’ we have observed many people raising their eyebrows; see below.
Think Before You Eat
Let me give you a couple of examples: the programme will allow you to make a number of simple cognitive changes in your thought processes…small changes that deliver ‘massive results’. For example, think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”? The result, imagine you are out having dinner with friends, and after ordering a burger, instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you ‘want’ fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you ‘need’ fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. Later, maybe the waiter says, do you ‘want’ another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you ‘need’ another glass of wine. You can watch an animated video explaining ‘Want and Need’ and how it works at the bottom of this page.
Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when was the last time you ate in response to actual, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…
