Why Red Wine is Good for You
Are you looking for a way to improve your health, and maybe lose a few pounds in the process? If so, you may want to consider drinking red wine in moderation. While red wine has gotten a bad rap in the past, it’s now officially recognised that it has several health benefits. So, drinking red wine in moderation is officially good for you! Here’s a look at all the ways red wine can help improve your health, including being a great source of antioxidants and helping improve gut bacteria. Cheers to your health!
The many health benefits of red wine
So what are the health benefits of red wine? For one, red wine is a great source of antioxidants. These powerful little nutrients help to protect your cells from damage by free radicals. Antioxidants also reduce inflammation throughout the body and have even been linked to a reduced risk of some chronic diseases.
Red wine and resveratrol
Red wine is also rich in polyphenols, and in particular, resveratrol, which is found in the skin of red grapes. In contrast, however, because white wine doesn’t contain any red grape skin, it also doesn’t have the same health benefits. Polyphenols are thought to promote gut health by helping to improve the balance of bacteria in the gut. Studies have shown that resveratrol has numerous health benefits, including reducing inflammation and protecting against heart disease.
Red wine is good for your heart health
Additionally, red wine has a reputation for being good for your heart. Drinking red wine in moderation helps to lower blood pressure. Studies have shown that it also helps to increase “good” HDL cholesterol levels and reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol levels. This is important because high cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease. So, red wine is definitely good for you! Red wine improves cognitive function
Red wine drinkers are less likely to suffer from depression. Recent research has also suggested that resveratrol may also have some cognitive benefits, by helping to improve cognitive function and prevent dementia. One study found that resveratrol supplements were able to improve memory and learning in a group of older adults. Another study found that resveratrol protected against age-related decline in brain function: older adults who drank moderate amounts of red wine had a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who didn’t drink any alcohol at all.
These studies suggest that red wine could help to keep your mind sharp as you age. So, give your brain a boost and reach for a glass of red!
Red wine for weight loss
Research, published in the National Journal of Obesity, says that resveratrol in red wine helps to convert bad “white” fat into good, calorie-burning “brown” fat. Resveratrol boosts the body’s ability to break down dietary fat into fatty acids, to be used for energy. As a result, it prevents the body from getting overloaded and also helps combat obesity and metabolic dysfunction. Another randomised control trial in Spain found that resveratrol changed the gut microbiota. As a result, it reduced the risk factors for metabolic syndrome and cardiac ailments in obese patients.
Red wine is good for you
Studies have found that drinking red wine in moderation can help reduce insulin resistance and balance blood sugar levels, lowering your blood sugar by up to 24 hours. Consequently, this reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. And if that’s not enough, red wine can also help you reach and maintain a healthy weight, and may even help you live longer! This is all great news for those of us who want to lose weight and get healthy. Can you drink red wine for weight loss? In moderation, absolutely!
Red wine reduces cancer risk
Studies have shown that moderate red wine consumption is linked with a reduced risk of certain types of cancer, including colon, ovary, and prostate, for example. Additionally, resveratrol in red wine can help reduce one of the risk factors for breast cancer. Researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, found that women who drank a glass of red wine per day lowered their oestrogen levels while increasing their testosterone. And in contrast, those who drank white wine didn’t experience the same benefits.
Also, another recent study, published in the National Library of Medicine, investigated the effect of red wine on human cancer cells. Researchers said their findings suggest that “red wines may contain some bioactive components, which are able to inhibit human cancer cell growth and colony formation.” While there is no magic bullet for preventing cancer, drinking a glass of red wine on a regular basis may help to lower your risk.
Red wine and the Blue Zones
Also, studies suggest that moderate red wine consumption can help to increase life expectancy. No doubt you’ve heard or read about the 5 “Blue Zones”, where the world’s healthiest and longest-living people live. They also don’t have the high rates of heart disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes that we see in the rest of the world. As you can imagine, the diet of Blue Zone populations is significantly healthier than the typical western diet!
Blue Zone Diet
Inhabitants of the Blue Zone areas eat an abundance of locally-grown, organic, fruit and veg, whole grains, like oats, barley, and brown rice, (not wheat), beans, (legumes), nuts and seeds, and plenty of olive oil. In contrast, they only eat small amounts of protein; fish several times per week, and around 50g of chicken, pork, or lamb, maybe just once or twice per week. The meat is naturally high in healthy Omega-3. This is because the animals are free-range, living on grass and plants, not grain! And, of course, highly-processed, convenience food doesn’t feature at all in these areas.
Why red wine is good for you
It’s probably not surprising, but people in the Blue Zones don’t drink sugar-sweetened fizzy drinks! However, they do drink copious amounts of coffee, herbal or green tea, and water. And interestingly, most of them also regularly drink 1-3 glasses of red wine per day! That’s specifically red, not white, by the way! So, it seems quite logical to conclude that red wine (in moderation, and combined with a healthy diet, of course!) is good for you. It can help us live longer while staying slim and healthy in the process. Red wine for weight loss – yes please!
The best types of red wine for your health benefits
So how much red wine should you drink to enjoy these health benefits? The general consensus is that one glass per day for women and two glasses per day for men is the perfect amount. And when it comes to choosing a red wine, look for one that is high in antioxidants and polyphenols, but low in sugar. Some of the best choices include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Sangiovese.
The Bottom Line
Red wine is good for you and drinking it in moderation can offer many health benefits. These include reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, helping with weight loss, and increasing life expectancy.
Red wine is good for your health
Of course, it’s important to drink responsibly – too much wine can lead to health problems just like any other alcohol. But if you enjoy the occasional glass of vino, you can rest assured that you’re doing your body a favour. So next time you pour yourself a glass of red wine, know that you’re not only enjoying a delicious beverage, but you’re also doing something good for your health! Cheers to that!
FAQ 1: Is red wine better for you than white wine?
ANSWER: Both red and white wines in moderation offer health benefits. However, red wine is richer in antioxidants and polyphenols, which are thought to offer more health benefits than white wine. This is because the powerful compound resveratrol is found in the skin of the grape, which is discarded when white wine is produced.
FAQ 2: How much red wine should I drink to enjoy these health benefits?
ANSWER: The general consensus is that one glass per day for women and two glasses per day for men is the perfect amount. Take a leaf out of the book of those who live in the Blue Zones. You can enjoy a glass of red wine every day if you wish to stay slim and healthy. However, moderation is the key!

FAQ 3: Apart from red wine what are other good sources of resveratrol?
ANSWER: Resveratrol is found in the skin of grapes, so any type of grape is a good source. You can also find it in peanuts, blueberries, and cranberries. Red wine is just one way to get this important antioxidant into your system!

Tip No. 1 – Only Eat When You’re Hungry!
This has to be our number one, golden rule, when it comes to achieving successful weight loss. In our experience, most overweight people eat for many different reasons, other than physical hunger. But, if you allow your emotions to control your eating habits, then it is unlikely that you will be able to control your weight as a result. So, before you reach for anything to eat, stop and ask yourself first if you physically NEED to eat, or you just WANT to…
Tip No. 2 – Use a Smaller Plate!
You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. No doubt you know about the power of optical illusions. But are you aware of just how much more generous the same size portion of food appears, when presented on a smaller plate, instead of a larger one? Have a look at the image below. It’s known as the Delboeuf optical illusion. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.
Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!
Reduce your calorie intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, on average, consumed around 20% less food compared with when they didn’t drink anything before they ate. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.
Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!
A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!
Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!
It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.
Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!
You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”!
However, our advice is to eat your favourite things first. Not only will you enjoy it more, but it’s also much easier to stop when you’ve eaten just the right amount and leave the rest on the plate.
