Wegovy, Metformin, Tirzepatide: the catch.
Wegovy, Metformin, Tirzepatide: the catch. In the ever-evolving world of medical science, discoveries often transcend their original purposes to address pressing health concerns. Metformin, initially designed as a diabetes treatment, and Tirzepatide, an FDA approved injectable medication for regulating blood sugar, are prime examples of this phenomenon. Beyond their roles in diabetes management, these drugs are now making waves as game-changers in the realm of weight loss.
1. Metformin
Metformin, a widely prescribed medication for managing blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes, has long been recognised for its potential in aiding weight loss. Although not initially developed as a weight-loss drug, it has garnered attention for its unexpected benefits in this arena.
Wegovy, Metformin and Tirzepatide: the catch.
Metformin’s Mechanism: Metformin primarily works by reducing the liver’s production of glucose and improving insulin sensitivity. These effects help stabilise blood sugar levels, but they also have implications for weight management. While the weight loss achieved with Metformin may be modest, typically around 5%, it offers hope for those struggling to shed excess pounds. Some individuals taking Metformin have reported positive outcomes, especially when combined with lifestyle modifications.
2. Wegovy: FDA Approved
In contrast to Metformin’s accidental weight loss benefits, Wegovy (Semaglutide) represents a purpose-built solution for obesity management. Wegovy, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2021 as a breakthrough injectable medication for weight loss. Wegovy, Metformin Tirzepatide the catch.
How Wegovy Works: The primary mechanism of action involves suppressing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness. By targeting the brain’s hunger centres, it helps individuals consume fewer calories, leading to significant weight loss. Clinical trials for Wegovy have yielded remarkable results. Participants in these studies experienced an average weight loss of 15% of their initial body weight over 68 weeks, surpassing the outcomes achieved with many other weight-loss interventions.
Combining Forces: Metformin and Wegovy
The convergence of Metformin and Wegovy represents a unique approach to weight management. Some healthcare providers are exploring the potential synergies between these two medications, leveraging Metformin’s glucose-regulating effects alongside Wegovy’s appetite control properties. By combining these medications, individuals may benefit from improved blood sugar control, reduced appetite, and enhanced weight-loss results. However, this approach requires careful monitoring and personalised treatment plans to ensure safety and effectiveness.
3. Tirzepatide: A New Player
A new player from Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical company, is Tirzepatide, due to gain approval in 2024. It has the potential to normalise blood sugar levels in an impressive 81 to 97 per cent of patients—a significant leap compared to its competitors.
While Tirzepatide’s primary role centres around diabetes management, it also emerges as a potent weight-loss ally—a beacon of hope for type 2 diabetes patients grappling with obesity-related complications such as high blood pressure. This medication is recommended for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) exceeding 35, or those unable to use insulin injections.
Eli Lilly has extended its ambitions beyond diabetes treatment, actively seeking approval for Tirzepatide for weight-loss treatments within the NHS. Encouragingly, clinical trials hint at Tirzepatide’s potential to achieve weight loss of up to 26 per cent—an impressive stride beyond the approximately 15 per cent achieved by Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy. Tirzepatide is to be marketed under the name Mounjaro in the UK.
When the drugs stop, as they will….
While Metformin, Wegovy, along with Tirzepatide are offering exciting possibilities, it’s crucial to note, however, the indications are that they will cease to work the day you stop taking them. Many people are expected to experience ‘creep’ and ‘regain’ in the months following. So, maybe it will be a lifelong journey, and what if Government funding for the drug is reversed?
The solution being recommended is to combine taking the drugs in-conjunction with the completing of a proven programme such as Oxford Therapeutics ‘My Weigh Less’. The programme incorporates elements that can yield improved outcomes. CBT, for instance, empowers individuals to identify and modify negative thought patterns related to food, body image, and self-esteem. This is crucial for tackling emotional eating, promoting healthier relationships with food, and addressing the psychological underpinnings of weight gain. Oxford Therapeutics psychological programme has been shown to be the perfect partner for Wegovy.
In conclusion, while the drugs mentioned above offer a potential avenue for weight loss, it’s essential to acknowledge their limitations. Combining them with psychological support and embracing sustainable lifestyle changes is key to long-term success. Patients must be reminded that their weight-loss journey is unique, and completing a psychological reset programme will help to deliver the desired weight loss expected, and permanently.
As research continues and medical science advances, the future of weight management is looking increasingly promising. However, individuals seeking to embark on weight-loss journeys should approach these medications with caution and in partnership with their doctor, emphasising the importance of holistic care for sustained success.

Our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’ for those wishing to lose weight. The programme incorporates an updated version of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, TCBT, which is the subject of our bestselling book, published globally by Hay House. Professor Windy Dryden of Goldsmiths University in London endorsed the book, and Professor Philip Zimbardo of Stanford University in the USA wrote the foreword. We also incorporate the latest developments around Neuroplasticity and Neuro-Linguistic Programming along with many other disciplines. One component of our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’. At this statement, ‘Psychological Reset,’ we have observed many people raising their eyebrows; see below.
Let me give you a couple of examples: the programme will allow you to make a number of simple cognitive changes in your thought processes…small changes that deliver ‘massive results’. For example, think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”?
The result: imagine you are out having dinner with friends, and after ordering a burger. Instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you ‘want’ fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you ‘need’ fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. Later, maybe the waiter says, do you ‘want’ another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you ‘need’ another glass of wine. You can watch an animated video explaining ‘Want and Need’ and how it works at the bottom of this page.
Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when was the last time you ate in response to actual, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…
