Weight Loss Dieting Consultants
Top Gun and Weight Loss Dieting Consultants. Maybe it sounds like an unusual name for an article. Maybe it was the title that piqued your interest; I really hope so. Top Gun and Weight Loss. You would be excused for thinking that the two issues are not connected. But in my opinion, they are interestingly intertwined with each other at a certain level. Weight Loss Consultants.
Tom Cruise himself is not included in this blog, but the film he starred in, “Top Gun”, inspired us to write it. Today I have just re-watched the original film to refresh my memory and to set me up ahead of watching the sequel, “Top Gun Maverick”.
So let’s briefly talk about Top Gun, which, as you may or may not know, is, in fact, not an imaginary school for fighter pilots created for the film. Top Gun is the nickname for what began as the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School and is now known as the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program. TOP GUN is now located in Nevada.
So what’s this got to do with weight loss, I hear you asking? The Top Gun Training School was established to upgrade the training of the top one per cent of US Navy Military Fighter Pilots. In effect creating a super league. A ‘Best of The Best’ group. After completing their advanced training, they were sent back to their original squadrons to share the new knowledge with their colleagues. This was followed by the next group being trained. A neat concept.
OK, enough for now, at least about fighter pilots, but what about dieters? Globally, what percentage succeeds in reaching their target weight and keeping it off? The US National Library of Science states that the success rate of those wishing to lose weight is a dismal 1 to 3 per cent. In the book “The Diet Free Revolution”, it reads ‘the most predictable long-term outcome of dieting is, in fact, weight gain’ How very depressing is that….!
We have spent the last fifteen years developing what we call our DPWL Programme; it stands for Dynamic Permanent Weight Loss. The approach is at the core of our all-new ‘My Weigh Less Treatment’ as described on the pages of this site. Our ongoing research and development techniques have similarities, at least in part, to the concepts of Top Gun training.
To ensure our programme remained at the cutting edge in the global weight-loss arena, we started out by studying the files of 1,000 past weight-loss clients. It is always interesting and motivating to read the files of those who achieved a successful weight-loss outcome. However, we knew early on that to really help people take control of their weight, we needed, instead, to study the in-depth details of those who had failed.
Like everyone else, we read on a daily basis stories, often with photos, in the press about ‘June Smith’. You can see her on the beach and read how she lost 75 pounds. But what is interesting is that nobody ever talks about just what went wrong for the other 97+ per cent that failed.
Our work has been featured in the press and on TV on both sides of the Atlantic, maybe as many as 50+ times. But how many times do you think the journalist or TV producer has told us in advance that they want to focus the interview around those that failed !!! There is zero interest in failure; have a look at your newspaper today. Failure and weight regain ‘Weight Creep ‘ are not subjects anyone wants to talk about. But the flip side of the failure coin must be success…..
Our belief that we learn the best lessons in life from failure focused our attention almost exclusively on the data set of past ‘failed’ clients. We had over 15,000 1:1 clinical hours of experience. We were continually asked why we were investing so much time and resources studying failure rather than success. Newspapers and magazines were always on the phone asking us for before and after photos of successful clients whom they could interview and feature in their publications. They were and continue to be exclusively interested in success.

We seldom see depressed client when they return to see us having achieved their target weight loss. Having a clear understanding of the obesity depression link is vital. Obviously, because if depression does precede obesity, then we may well be treating it incorrectly. As an example, if we can significantly improve lift a person’s mood, self-esteem and a general feeling of well-being, would that lead to weight loss? Is that a more successful protocol for treating their obesity?
For our research, we initially started studying traits, clusters of scenarios, or situations around failed dieters. After all, if we provided an identical treatment protocol to ten clients, how could it be that half, as an example, would achieve their desired result, and the remainder would fail? How was that even possible? So, we started looking in detail at failure because it seemed to make clear sense to us; that was where we would find the answers.
The findings of our research have been incorporated into the treatment mix we continue to provide to new clients. We also continue to monitor both the success and failure of present clients, incorporating that data into the ever-refining process. This has resulted in a type of circular closed loop of continual improvements and upgrades. Similar in many ways to the techniques incorporated into Top Gun Training…
One small example of our ongoing research is the connection between depression and obesity. Like many others, we wanted to know just what came first. It is a known fact that many overweight people are depressed, but are they depressed because they are overweight, or are they overweight because they are depressed? We have a dedicated article on the site if you are interested in learning more.

So, what were the other traits of our failed weight-loss clients? Well, there were a few. In fact, we went on to write an algorithm around them that is now at the centre of the My Weigh Less treatment programme. But the trait that was almost consistent related to ‘instant versus delayed gratification’.
Allow me to elaborate on instant versus delayed gratification. Let’s presume that you want or need to lose 40 pounds of excess weight. Now imagine that we said we can help you, but we need you to follow what is probably the most limiting diet known to man.
You are going to live on cold cabbage soup and lemon water, absolutely nothing more, for just ten days. As a result, we guarantee 100% that you will be 40 pounds lighter; that’s two or three clothes sizes down in just ten days. Would you take the challenge? Ten days of almost hell for a 40-pound, guaranteed weight loss…? We predict that the majority of people if not all, would take up the challenge with open arms.
But why would they? Well, simply because it’s positioned around ‘instant gratification’. It’s a very small time price to pay (a mere ten days) for a very big physical reward that comes very, very quickly. So small price, big result. Weight Loss Dieting Consultants.
To continue now, replacing the ‘instant gratification’ with ‘delayed gratification’, let’s try a more realistic example. So what about a similar offer? This time, though, it’s not such a restrictive diet, but one that you could maybe sort of live with for a short period of time. But once again, the 40-pound weight loss would be guaranteed.
However, this time, you have to wait twenty weeks for the payback. Think about it; it’s harder, right? It’s a lot harder. There are twenty weekends in there to contend with now. Say those 20 weeks are going to run through Christmas, and you may have an office party scheduled. Wow!
This, of course, is seeking delayed gratification, a different mindset. Unlike the instant gratification scenario, this one is reversed. So, it is a high price to pay for the same, but delayed, reward. It is, of course, highly realistic; we could easily deliver it. What would you do?
They say that whatever you’re trying to achieve in your life, one thing is for certain…The greatest things always come to those who wait or those who can delay, like adopting a lifestyle based on delayed gratification. It’s similar to permanent weight loss, I guess.
You see, your emotional brain has a hard time imagining the future. It’s also the part most often associated with instant gratification: the “I want it, and I want it now; I can’t wait, regardless of the outcome” part. That part is Present Hedonistic.
It’s a really important thing to understand because it affects many parts of your life without you even knowing it. The emotional part of your brain almost does not believe or think a future exists; actually, it is dangerous. It just wants to party. It thinks, let’s order a couple more beers, pick up a pack of cigarettes and max out the credit card. But on the other hand, our logical brain, the delayed gratification part, clearly sees all of the future consequences of our current actions. During our treatment, we now focus on ensuring all clients are fully aligned around instant versus delayed gratification.
So, finally, we come to the million-dollar question: what single trait do successful dieters have? Before we answer that, it is interesting to note that the same question has been asked at universities of medical specialists around the world many times in the past.
The answer that everyone gives is the same and maybe not very glamorous. The answer takes many people by surprise, but our own research falls 100 per cent in line with all the other global studies. The keeping of a food diary is the number one indicator of successful and permanent weight loss.
Psychologists, doctors and weight-loss professionals know exactly why and how this works. However, they are continually baffled as to why more people interested in losing weight don’t use it. The rules around keeping a food diary take some getting used to. Firstly, you must write down in your diary (we are talking a paper diary, not an online version) everything that is about to go in your mouth ahead of you eating it, never afterwards.
So, if you are sitting at a bar and you fancy a few nuts, that’s completely fine. But first, get out your little diary and write down ‘six peanuts’, then eat them. If you decide to have a few more, fine; get out your diary and log them first. The details of keeping a food diary and exactly how and why it works are detailed on a dedicated Blog page. Take a look; you may find it interesting.
