Tom Cruise himself is not included in this blog, but the film he starred in, “Top Gun”, inspired us to write it. Today I have just re-watched the original film to refresh my memory, and to set me up, ahead of watching the sequel, “Top Gun Maverick”.

So let’s briefly talk about Top Gun, which, as you may or may not know, is in fact not an imaginary school for fighter pilots created for the film. Top Gun is the nickname for what began as the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School and is now known as the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program. TOP GUN is now located at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada.

So what’s this got to do with weight loss, I hear you asking? The Top Gun Training School was established to upgrade the training of the top one per cent of US Navy Military Fighter Pilots. In effect creating a super league. After completing their advanced training, they were sent back to their original squadrons to share the new knowledge with their colleagues.

OK, enough for now, at least about fighter pilots, but what about dieters? Globally, what percentage succeeds in reaching their target weight and keeping it off? The US National Library of Science states that the success rate of those wishing to lose weight is a dismal 1 to 3 per cent. In the book “The Diet Free Revolution” they state that ‘the most predictable long term outcome of dieting is in fact weight gain’ How very depressing is that….!

We have spent the last fifteen years developing what we call DPML; it stands for Dynamic Permanent Weight Loss. The approach is at the core of our all new My Weigh Less Treatment. We started out by studying the files of 1,000 past weight-loss clients. It is always interesting and motivating to read the files of those who achieved a successful weight-loss outcome. However, we knew early on that the ‘Silver Bullet’ to pique everyone’s interest that would, in effect, make a real difference, was actually buried in the files and harvested data of those who had failed.

This belief ensured we focused our attention almost exclusively on the data set of past ‘failed’ clients. We were often asked why we were investing so much time and resources studying failure, rather than success. Newspapers and magazines were often on the phone asking us for before and after photos of successful clients who they could interview and feature in their publications. They were only ever interested in success.

Anyway, we started to look for traits; clusters of scenarios, or situations around failed dieters. After all, if we provided an identical treatment protocol to ten clients, how could it be that half, as an example, would achieve their desired result, and the remainder would fail. How was that even possible? So, we started studying failure, because it just seemed to make crystal clear sense to us.

The findings of our research have been incorporated into the treatment mix we provide to new clients. We also continue to monitor both the success and failure of present clients, incorporating that data into the ever refining process. Allow me to me elaborate on instant versus delayed gratification.  Let’s presume that you want or need to lose 40 pounds of excess weight. Now imagine that we said we can help you, but we need you to follow what is probably the most limiting diet known to man.

You are going to live on cold cabbage soup and lemon water, absolutely nothing more, for just ten days. As a result, we guarantee 100% that you will be 40 pounds lighter; that’s 2 or more clothes sizes down. Would you take the challenge? Ten days of almost hell for a 40-pound, guaranteed weight loss…? We predict that the majority of people would take up the challenge with open arms.

But why would they? Well, simply because it’s positioned around ‘instant gratification’. It’s a very small time price to pay, (a mere ten days), for a very big physical reward that comes very, very quickly.

To continue now, replacing the ‘instant gratification’ with ‘delayed gratification’, let’s try a more realistic example. So what about a similar offer? This time though, it’s not such a restrictive diet, but one that you could maybe sort of live with, for a short period of time. But once again, the 40-pound weight loss would be guaranteed.

However, this time you have to wait twenty weeks for the pay back. Think about it; it’s harder right? It’s a lot harder. There are twenty weekends in there to contend with now. Say those 20 weeks are going to run through Christmas, and you may have an office party scheduled. Wow!

This of course, is seeking a delayed gratification; a different mindset. Unlike the instant gratification scenario, this one is reversed. So, it has a high, time price to pay, for the same, but delayed, reward. It is, of course, highly realistic; we could easily deliver it. What would you do?

They say that whatever you’re trying to achieve in your life, one thing is for certain…The greatest things always come to those who wait, or those who can delay, like adopting a lifestyle based around delayed gratification. It’s similar to permanent weight loss, I guess.

You see your emotional brain has a hard time imagining the future. It’s also the part most often associated with instant gratification: the “I want it and I want it now, I can’t wait, regardless of the outcome” part.

Psychologists, doctors and weight-loss professionals know exactly why, and how, this works, but they are continually baffled as to why more people interested in losing weight don’t use it. The rules around keeping a food diary take some getting used to. Firstly, you must write down in your diary, (we are talking a paper diary, not an online version), everything that is about to go in your mouth, ahead of you eating it, never afterwards.

FAQ 1: Is the weight loss treatment you provide really Unique ?

ANSWER: Weight Loss Dieting Consultants The treatment we provide, and as incorporated into the My Weigh Less programme, is completely unique, should anyone tell you they can provide the same, then please ask for details of their training and accreditation certificate in TCBT. Tip No. 1 – Only Eat When You’re Hungry!

This has to be our number one, golden rule, when it comes to achieving successful weight loss. In our experience, most overweight people eat for many different reasons, other than physical hunger. But, if you allow your emotions to control your eating habits, then it is unlikely that you will be able to control your weight as a result. So, before you reach for anything to eat, stop and ask yourself first if you physically NEED to eat, or you just WANT to…

Tip No. 2 – Use a Smaller Plate!

You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. No doubt you know about the power of optical illusions. But are you aware of just how much more generous the same size portion of food appears, when presented on a smaller plate, instead of a larger one? Have a look at the image below. It’s known as the Delboeuf optical illusion. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.

Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!

Reduce your calorie intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, on average, consumed around 20% less food compared with when they didn’t drink anything before they ate. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.

Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!

A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!

Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!

It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.

Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!

You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”!

However, our advice is to eat your favourite things first. Not only will you enjoy it more, but it’s also much easier to stop when you’ve eaten just the right amount and leave the rest on the plate.
