Will metformin help me lose weight? Metformin can do more than help those suffering with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar. It may also help others to lose stubborn pounds. But, I am sorry to say, you still need to follow a healthy diet and incorporate exercise into your daily regime to achieve long-term, successful weight loss.

In addition to her story appearing in the national press, Kay was a guest on the UK’s Lorraine Kelly TV Show. Further down the page you can read the verified case study including information about Kay’s weight-loss journey and metformin use.
Kay, lost 100 pounds – Jackie lost 70 pounds
Jackie Hay, another of our clients appeared on the UK’s This Morning TV Show to talk with Eamonn Holmes about her 70 pound weight loss. When she started her journey, Jackie was also taking metformin to control her insulin resistance. But following her treatment with us she managed to reverse her condition and baffle her consultants at the local hospital. She is now off the metformin and 70 pounds lighter. A verified case study including additional information about Jackie is at the bottom of this page.
Back to Metformin for Weight loss
If you research metformin on the Internet, you will read about the many unwanted side effects. The main ones being, diarrhoea, muscle aches, and sleepiness. However, there is one positive side effect of metformin that people welcome with open arms. And particularly by those struggling to lose weight. However whist it may help, it is not the amazing weight-loss solution often described in the press.
Metformin: The Diabetes Drug That May Help You Lose Weight
The pages on Google are full of stories regarding the use of metformin as an aid to losing weight. Although metformin isn’t specifically a weight-loss drug, recent studies show that weight loss is one side effect. On this page, you can learn a little more about how metformin could be used as a weight-loss drug, and to simultaneously manage other health concerns.
Will metformin help me lose weight
What is Metformin?
Metformin is a medication to help control blood sugar levels in people who have type 2 diabetes. As we said above, metformin has also shown to be helpful for people who are trying to lose weight, even if they don’t have diabetes. And, of course, it will also lower their chances of developing diabetes, partly by reducing how many calories they eat.
How does Metformin Work?
Metformin mainly acts by lowering the amount of glucose released by the liver. It also improves a person’s insulin sensitivity. This means that their body uses insulin more efficiently and it stabilises their blood sugar levels too. Consequently, it helps reduce potential complications of high blood sugar. This includes heart disease, as well as damage to the kidneys, nerves or eyes.
Can People Without Diabetes Take Metformin?
So, if you do not suffer with diabetes, is it OK to take metformin? Well, according to New York based endocrinologist, Dr. Minisha SOOD, metformin has been used off-label, or outside its intended purpose, for weight management for some time.
In fact, a review published in December 2018 in the European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology examining the efficacy of metformin for weight loss in overweight and obese people without diabetes concluded that the drug could assist in decreasing the body mass index in both adolescents and adults. But be aware, the weight loss maybe as little as 5%, and also that when you stop taking the medication….the weight will return. But do not worry, we provide an Award Winning solution further down the page
What is the connection with weight loss?
Metformin is an oral medication that helps the body to produce more insulin, which in turn reduces blood sugar levels. It also helps cells use insulin more efficiently. This in turn causes weight loss in some patients who take it because their bodies are not able to properly process sugars. Metformin does in some circumstances actually play a part in a person actually gaining weight. Why, because when a person takes the drug their blood sugar levels increase resulting in an increased appetite.
Metformin and Weight Loss
There are different theories as to why some people lose weight with metformin. Some people feel generally unwell, resulting in them eating less food. Another theory suggests that the uncomfortable side effects that people experience, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, affects their food intake quite significantly.
So, will metformin help me lose weight permanently?
Can metformin help with long-term weight loss? Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that weight loss with metformin is long-term. According to a study by Diabetes Care, the average weight loss after a year taking the drug was only 6 pounds. And, for people who can’t take metformin, due to chronic kidney disease perhaps, diet and lifestyle changes are still the keys to sustainable weight loss.
So, it’s definitely not a miracle weight-loss solution, and if you overeat and lead a sedentary life, you won’t lose weight. “It’s important to follow a healthy diet low in refined sugars and carbohydrates, if you are prone to high insulin levels, so that maximum benefit from the medication is received.” So says Dr. Sood.
How can you find out if it’s right for you?
Metformin is usually prescribed as a first-line therapy for those with diabetes. It is often used in combination with other drugs for those who don’t respond well to the medication alone. Metformin can in some cases help people with type 2 diabetes lose weight and reduce cardiovascular risk factors. This includes high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
To determine whether metformin is right for you, speak to your doctor about your specific health needs and medications. They can tell you if it’s right for you and answer any questions you may have. You may find it interesting to read the page on Low Carb vs Mediterranean Diets.
Losing Weight with Metformin
At present metformin, is only available on prescription, and also, at the time of writing, the FDA has not approved it for weight loss. As a result, doctors are more likely to recommend other, more traditional methods to overweight patients. This includes diet and lifestyle changes.
Metformin, birth defects.
Be Aware! – Research released on the 28th March 2022, based on a study in Denmark, and Stanford University, has suggested that a link exists between male patients taking metformin and birth defects of their offspring. A Reuters article, published in The Daily Mail, reported that researchers said there was a 1.4 times greater risk of birth defects in boys whose fathers were taking the drug, compared to those born to fathers who were not…
Why don’t more people take this drug?
Metformin and Weight Loss – The Bottom Line
The main risk associated with this drug is the possibility of lactic acidosis. The symptoms of this include abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, fast, shallow breathing, muscle cramping, general tiredness, and weakness. Also, because it needs a prescription, you will have to consult your doctor before you can start taking it.
In conclusion, metformin can cause moderate weight loss. However, it’s most likely to be as a temporary result of the common side effects, such as an upset stomach and suppressed appetite. Also, metformin is certainly not a direct replacement for a lifestyle of eating healthily and being physically active. So, you can’t simply rely on pills to do all the hard work for you. Because to achieve permanent weight loss, you really need to make long-term, lifestyle changes.

The Metformin alternative
Kay Lindley was 59 years of age when she began her treatment with us. She had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 10 years earlier. She had also been gradually taking higher and higher doses of metformin, just to keep up with her weight and poor blood sugar control. Owing to her weight, she was also suffering with severe arthritis, resulting in ever worsening mobility issues. Her starting weight was 22 1/2 stone, or 315 pounds. After 25 weeks Kay had lost an incredible 70 pounds.
Ten years on metformin
At the 70 pound weight loss point, Kay visited her diabetes nurse resulting in her ten year level of medication being slashed by 50%! But that was just the beginning; Kay went on to lose a whopping 105 pounds. She reversed the decade of diabetes issues, and had the metformin removed from her medication list. Her arthritis went into remission, and she was invited to appear on national TV in the UK.
Doctors disbelief
Since completing her treatment, Jackie has so far lost around just over 70 pounds. But the medical news is that she has reversed the previously diagnosed fatty liver disease; after three years she is finally off the metformin. She has now been discharged by the endocrinologist, and has amazed her doctors and specialists. Jackie could hardly believe her own weight-loss story!
The Takeaway
What is interesting about both Kay and Jackie, is that they had both been prescribed and had been taking metformin for many years, in the case of Kay for over ten years. However, in both cases their weight continued to increase. This would indicate that taking the metformin did not play a part in their weight loss. Martin above, lost 85 pounds on the programme.
So there is certainly evidence that suggests that metformin can help with weight loss. However, it is important to keep in mind that this medication must be prescribed by a doctor and that it is not a magic pill. In addition, lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise are still the most important factors in achieving and maintaining weight loss. Nevertheless, for those who are struggling to lose weight, metformin may be worth discussing with your doctor. Will metformin help me lose weight.
Metformin and Weight Loss
FAQ 1: Why would someone take metformin to lose weight?
ANSWER: Metformin works in a few ways. Firstly, it slows the conversion of food to body fat. Secondly, it helps control blood sugar levels so you don’t feel hungry all the time. Thirdly, metformin can help reduce how much insulin your body makes so you can maintain a healthier weight.
However, it can help with weight loss as well. It is not yet certain as to how this happens. Some studies have indicated that it may work by suppressing appetite, and others suggest that it works by slowing the passage of food through the gut.
Metformin is safe, but to make sure you are taking the right dose it is recommended that you consult your doctor. Metformin does not show any significant side effects, but it should only be taken under the supervision of a medical professional.
FAQ 2: I have been prescribed metformin for type 2 diabetes, is it OK if I take it as a weight-loss aid?
ANSWER: Your doctor will usually prescribe drugs other than metformin specifically for weight loss. There are also the potential side effects of metformin that should be taken into consideration. The best way to lose weight is to follow a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise.

Below is a selection of weight-loss tips that everyone can start using straight away. And, if you enroll in the My Weigh Less Course, you will learn many more of our helpful tips and techniques about how to achieve successful, permanent weight loss.
Tip No. 1 – Only Eat When You’re Hungry!
This has to be our number one, golden rule, when it comes to achieving successful weight loss. In our experience, most overweight people eat for many different reasons, other than physical hunger. But, if you allow your emotions to control your eating habits, then it is unlikely that you will be able to control your weight as a result. So, before you reach for anything to eat, stop and ask yourself first if you physically NEED to eat, or you just WANT to…
Tip No. 2 – Use a Smaller Plate!
You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. No doubt you know about the power of optical illusions. But are you aware of just how much more generous the same size portion of food appears, when it’s arranged on a smaller plate, instead of a larger one? Have a look at the image below. It’s known as the Delboeuf optical illusion. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.
Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!
Reduce your calorie intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, on average, consumed around 20% less food compared with when they didn’t drink anything before they ate. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.
Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!
A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!
Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!
It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.
Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!
You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”!
However, our advice is to eat your favourite things first. Not only will you enjoy it more, but it’s also much easier to stop when you’ve eaten just the right amount and leave the rest on the plate.
