Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss

Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss Welcoming a new life into the world is an exhilarating experience, but it often comes with a host of physical challenges, including weight gain pre and post-pregnancy. The pressure to shed those extra pounds quickly through diets and strenuous exercises can be overwhelming for new mothers. However, an alternative approach that focuses on psychology rather than dieting and exercise is gaining recognition for its effectiveness in post-pregnancy weight loss.

Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss

Understanding the Challenges

Post-pregnancy weight loss is not just a physical journey; it’s a mental and emotional one as well. New mothers face numerous psychological challenges, including sleep deprivation, hormonal fluctuations, and the stress of caring for a newborn. These factors can make traditional weight-loss methods seem daunting and unsustainable. The new psychology-focused programme from Oxford Therapeutics delivers a programme that involves no exercise or meal replacement bars or drinks, and most importantly, it delivers a permanent result.

It’s essential for new mothers to understand that the image of seemingly rapid transformations portrayed by the media and by social influencers doesn’t always reflect the reality of post-pregnancy weight loss. The pressure to achieve a “body perfect” immediately after giving birth can be overwhelming and sometimes unrealistic. The focus should not solely be on shedding pounds at an unrealistic pace but instead on embracing a holistic approach that considers the well-being of both mother and child.

Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss

Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss

The media and social influencers frequently emphasise quick-fix methods, but it’s crucial to resist these unrealistic expectations. The body undergoes significant changes during pregnancy, and the process of post-pregnancy weight loss should be gradual and sustainable.

A psychology-focused approach to post-pregnancy weight loss recognises the emotional and physical changes that mothers experience and offers strategies to promote a healthier relationship with food and one’s own body. By nurturing self-compassion, addressing emotional eating, and supporting gradual weight loss, this approach enables new mothers to prioritise their overall well-being while achieving their post-pregnancy weight loss goals. So, for new mothers embarking on this journey, the key takeaway is this: Embrace the real and embrace the gradual. Celebrate the milestones along the way, and remember that post-pregnancy weight loss is not just about losing weight; it’s about gaining a new perspective on your body and well-being.

The Power of Psychology. Instead of resorting to strict diets and exercise and workouts, experts are advocating for a psychological approach that nurtures both the mind and body. After all, it is widely accepted that being overweight is more often than not a psychological issue: those overweight find themselves eating because they are tired, bored, depressed or sad, seldom because they are physically hungry. Here’s how psychology can aid in post-pregnancy weight loss:

Here are a few pointers to get you started

Self-Compassion: New mothers need to show themselves compassion and patience. The process of childbirth and recovery is a significant physical and emotional journey. Being kind to oneself and not setting unrealistic expectations is crucial.

Mindful Eating: Mindful eating involves paying attention to the body’s hunger cues and savouring each bite. It helps new mothers reconnect with their bodies and make healthier food choices without the stress of strict dieting.

Emotional Resilience: Pregnancy and childbirth can lead to a roller coaster of emotions. Building emotional resilience through relaxation techniques, meditation, and support groups can prevent emotional eating and binging. Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss.

Stress Management: High-stress levels can lead to weight gain. Learning stress management techniques, such as deep breathing exercises or yoga, can help new mothers cope effectively. post-pregnancy weight loss.

Positive Self-Image: Developing a positive self-image is vital. Instead of fixating on weight loss, focus on building self-confidence and embracing the post-pregnancy body. post-pregnancy weight loss.

The psychological approach to post-pregnancy weight loss emphasises setting realistic expectations and focusing on long-term health rather than rapid weight loss. It promotes self-care, self-acceptance, and self-love. The most common question people ask is, “how quickly will I lose weight?”. Of course, the answer is different for everybody. However, initially, at least, you should expect to lose around two pounds per week, depending on your starting weight, of course. post-pregnancy weight loss.

The science of psychology is a potent ally in the realm of weight loss. By understanding and addressing the psychological factors that drive behaviours related to food choices, cravings, motivation, self-control, and self-perception, individuals can enhance their chances of achieving and maintaining a healthier weight. Oxford Therapeutics Ltd founders Martin and Marion Shirran have been researching, building and delivering weight-loss programmes globally for twenty years. A Positive Relationship

In conclusion, post-pregnancy weight loss should prioritise mental and emotional well-being alongside physical health. A psychological approach encourages new mothers to embrace their journey, make mindful choices, and build a positive relationship with their bodies. By nurturing the mind and body in tandem, new mothers can embark on a sustainable and fulfilling path to post-pregnancy weight loss, promoting overall well-being for themselves and their growing families.

It must be understood that post-pregnancy weight loss is a multifaceted journey that requires a holistic approach. New mothers, as we have said, should begin with self-compassion, understanding that childbirth and recovery are profound physical and emotional experiences, and setting realistic expectations is essential.

Mindful eating empowers them to listen to their bodies making healthier food choices without resorting to restrictive diets. Emotional resilience is a valuable asset in navigating the emotional fluctuations that accompany pregnancy and childbirth, preventing emotional eating and binging.

Stress management techniques are essential, such as deep breathing and yoga, will always help mothers effectively manage stress, which can contribute to weight gain. Ultimately, fostering a positive self-image should be at the forefront, emphasising self-confidence and celebrating the post-pregnancy body as a testament to an incredible journey. By embracing these principles, new mothers can embark on a balanced and sustainable path towards post-pregnancy weight loss, prioritising their well-being and overall health.

Our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’ for those wishing to lose weight. The programme incorporates an updated version of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, TCBT, which is the subject of our bestselling book, published globally by Hay House. Professor Windy Dryden of Goldsmiths University in London endorsed the book, and Professor Philip Zimbardo of Stanford University in the USA wrote the foreword. We also incorporate the latest developments around Neuroplasticity and Neuro-Linguistic Programming along with many other disciplines. One component of our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’. At this statement, ‘Psychological Reset,’ we have observed many people raising their eyebrows; see below.

Let me give you a couple of examples: the programme will allow you to make a number of simple cognitive changes in your thought processes…small changes that deliver ‘massive results’. For example, think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”? The result, imagine you are out having dinner with friends, and after ordering a burger, instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you ‘want’ fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you ‘need’ fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. Later, maybe the waiter says, do you ‘want’ another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you ‘need’ another glass of wine. You can watch an animated video explaining ‘Want and Need’ and how it works at the bottom of this page.

Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when was the last time you ate in response to actual, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…
