The Police Officers Weight Loss Diet
60 percent of Police officers are Overweight!
– Here is How You Change It –
Police Officers Weight Loss Diet
Two short media pieces.
Police Officers Weight Loss Diet. The Wall Street Journal issued a report that more than 40 percent of police officers, firefighters, and security officers are obese. Similarly, the FBI conducted a study that found eight-out-of-10 police officers are overweight. Missing from both of these reports are reasons why the officers are overweight and obese, and offers of help.
An article in the Daily Mail stated that; Two thirds of officers in one of England’s police forces are currently overweight, a senior officer has recently revealed. Almost 70 per cent of the officers in one constabulary alone are considered either overweight or obese, the force’s Chief Superintendent has warned.

The Police Problem
So why are police officers overweight? It’s a good question, and one with many answers. Basically, the Police do not have that much of an obesity problem, when compared to the general population. This covers both the US and the UK. The level of obesity in the forces is only slightly higher than that of the generalย public. The perceived issue may be more to do with the publicโs expectation around officers of the law, and what they expect from them, more than anything else.
Martin Shirran above lost 84 pounds following the treatment
The fact is though that the average weight of a police officer is slightly higher than someone of comparable age who is not in the force. We are sure that there are a number of mitigating reasons for that. We rely on the police. The public expect them to be able to react quickly to a range of threats, so the issue of them being overweight needs to be addressed. An article in the Wall Street Journal listed four potential reasons that appear to exist in police forces on both sides of the Atlantic. – 1) Stress. 2) Poor Eating Habits. 3) Extended Periods Sitting. 4) Shift Work.

Reason No. 1 – Stress
So, reason no. 1 – Stress. The job of a police officer does come with stress, of course. They are on the front line in many dangerous and unpleasant situations, often on a daily basis. The hormone related to stress is cortisol, which is known to be responsible for the craving of highly palatable foods that have the ultra-addictive combination of sugar, fat and salt. Like pizza, as an example. Eating these foods then stimulates the brain to release the feel-good hormone, dopamine. This temporarily reduces tension, and counteracts the negative feelings associated with stress. The perfect Circle!

Unfortunately, excess cortisol actually has a double whammy effect on the body! Firstly, by causing a person to crave high calorie and processed foods. And secondly, by making it easier for the body to create extra fat in the abdominal area. And on top of that, it slows down metabolic function when weโre stressed!!! An additional cause of stress in the police force relates to worries around financial issues. An article published on the UK Police Federation website stated that over 50 percent of officers worry about money on a daily basis.
Reason No. 2 – Poor Eating Habits
In the US at least, the stereotype of a police officer is to see him or her with a doughnut in their hand. For many officers who work shifts, fast food outlets are obviously very convenient, and a quick place to re-stock on high carbohydrate fuel between calls. Service is often fast and officers can also eat it on the go if necessary. The portions, as always, are on the large size, and the accompanying drinks are normally sugar heavy. The other factor experienced by those working shifts is that normal balanced and nutritious meals cooked at home with their family are only an occasional luxury, rather than a regular occurrence.
Reason No. 3 – Extended Periods of Inactivity
Unfortunately, inactivity is an almost standard feature for many in the police force. Officers are either forced to sit at a desk, or sit in a car, which is a perfect recipe for obesity. Countless research has drawn a link between the lack of physical activity and obesity, which comes with other health conditions including elevated blood pressure and raised cholesterol levels.
Sitting at a desk, or in a car, for the entirety of your work day is a definite cause for concern when it comes to health. A recent study indicated that people consume more calories when they are sedentary/sitting down, than when they physically move. Additionally it stated that satiety isn’t as effective for those who are not physically active.

Reason No. 4 – Shift Work
The media is full of new research findings around the part that sleep plays in obesity, and those working shifts are particularly affected. A connection between shift work and a range of health problems including an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke, was recently reported in the Guardian Newspaper. Another report stated that people working night shifts tend to have poorer diets, with the food available to them during the night tending to be less healthy.

Top Weight Loss Tips
Tip No. 1 – Only Eat When You’re Hungry!
This has to be our number one, golden rule, when it comes to achieving successful weight loss. In our experience, most overweight people eat for many different reasons, other than physical hunger. But, if you allow your emotions to control your eating habits, then it is unlikely that you will be able to control your weight as a result. So, before you reach for anything to eat, stop and ask yourself first if you physically NEED to eat, or you just WANT to…
Tip No. 2 – Use a Smaller Plate!
You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. Remember the famous Delboeuf optical illusion, because a small portion of food looks more generous when served on a smaller size plate. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.
Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!
Reduce Your Calorie Intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, consumed, on average, around 20% less food than previously. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.
Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!
A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!
Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!
It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.
Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!
You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”! However, our advice is to eat your favourite things first. Not only will you enjoy it more, but it’s also much easier to stop when you’ve eaten just the right amount and leave the rest on the plate.

The Shirrans’ weight loss approach has been the subject of continued research and development over the last fifteen years. Their youngest client was just fourteen, and the oldest, eighty-six. Overweight People are not Lazy
Being overweight, having an unhealthy relationship with food, is predominantly a psychological issue. So, it’s a learned behaviour, because people are not born obese. But people are rarely overweight because they are lazy, or lacking in willpower; the issue goes much deeper. As a result, they simply need a ‘Psychological Reset.’ Alison, photo below, lost 70 pounds with Martin and Marion’s treatment.

Many clients tell us that they can’t remember the last time they ate in response to real, physical hunger. And so, we will ask you: โDo you eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, or maybe just to please someone else?โ Then we will help you to change your mindset around food. We will help you
We will also help you to make simple changes in your other thought processes… How much better could your relationship with food be, if we taught your subconscious mind how to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”? For example, instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you want fries with that?” without thinking you process the question as: “Do you need fries with that?” You can watch a short animated video explaining Want and Need at the bottom of this page.
