No More Diet Shakes or Bars
No More Diet Shakes or Bars! It’s possible that in the past, like many others, you may have tried one of the many meal replacement shakes or diet bar products around. They seem to come and go on supermarket shelves, almost in line with the seasons. They appear to have been far more popular a few years back. Many were marketed as meal replacement drinks. Others were often presented as diet bars for you to consume whilst drinking water. It was stated that users would get all, or at least a large percentage of their daily requirements of vitamins and nutrients, as long as they consumed the set number of units each day.
No More Shakes or Diet Bars
So why were they so popular? Well it seems that it came down to the fact that the manufactures believed we were lazy. The products were positioned in the market place as being hyper convenient, for those of us who were always on the go. The advertising campaigns told us it was just so easy to grab a shake, or a diet bar, and go. No food shopping, no meal prepping and zero washing up afterwards, with almost guaranteed weight loss thrown in! What was there not to like….?
Over the past few years there has been an ever-changing selection of bars, shakes and general meal replacement products available. Now, however, it seems that their popularity is starting to fade. This may be down to the fact that there is something of a seismic shift taking place towards a more science-based approach to weight loss. So, the new kid on the block seems to be ‘permanent weight loss’ and the demise of the age old yo-yo diet may well be on the horizon.
No More Diet Shakes or Bars
In the age of Instagram and social media in general, everyone wants to get the perfect body – and fast! And, for the lay person, the shakes and meal replacement products being promoted in the media often seemed to be the fast, perfect solution they dreamed of. But the old saying “if it sounds too good to be true it probably is” all of a sudden made consumers re-think their purchasing decisions. Some of them, of course, had previously been spending hundreds of pounds a month purchasing the range of different products.
The key to reducing and then maintaining a healthy weight is down to adopting a balanced, possibly low-carb diet. It is no secret that meal replacement products just aren’t as appealing, or healthy, as an actual meal. Just think about it: they can sit on shop shelves for weeks, or even months on end, without refrigeration. So as you can imagine, the ingredients in them are heavily processed to ensure a long shelf life.
No More Shakes or Diet Bars
As a result, there is very little left in the way of whole food or nutrition, the basic elements that are essential for a balanced diet. Additionally, nutrient absorption and healthy digestion are hugely diminished. One other negative factor with the meal replacement products was down to the fact that they were so socially non-inclusive. Because they don’t fit in with any form of social life they are simply not sustainable as a long-term weight-loss regime.
You don’t need us to tell you that continuously sipping a diet shake, or eating a meal replacement bar, isn’t quite the same as tucking into a delicious meal. It’s human nature to experience joy from eating, and a diet shake doesn’t have the nuanced flavour profile of say, a delicious chicken salad with fresh vegetables. They also don’t look as appetising, so you don’t get that same kind of excitement and enjoyment.
No More Diet Shakes or Bars
Also we should never forget the aroma of wonderfully cooked food. The sensation of ‘smell’ is one of the strongest sensations we have as a species. The smell of frying onions, as an example, can stay with us for a lifetime. Scientific studies have found that simply smelling the cooking food piques our sensations, long before it touches our tongues. This, of course, just does not happen with the bar and shakes. As a result, you are much more likely to fall off the wagon and turn to foods that are unhealthy, just to satisfy your natural craving for some instant gratification. Plus, of course, the social pleasure of enjoying a meal with family or friends is no longer in the equation.
No More Shakes or Diet Bars
If you have always struggled with your weight, then you need to investigate a permanent solution, not a quick fix. You should take a serious look at the Gastric Mind Band and the recently launched, award-winning My Weigh Less treatment. Both provide a permanent solution to weight loss. Built on some of the most researched and scientifically focused interventions available, the treatment incorporates clinical hypnosis, along with the unique version of CBT – TCBT that was developed by Martin and Marion Shirran, exclusively for use in the weight-loss arena.
The Bottom Line
When it comes to weight loss, there is no magic fix. Though diet shakes may seem like a quick and easy solution, they are not a sustainable, or healthy way to lose weight permanently. And now people are starting to realise they are not the magical solution they were built up to be. Most meal replacement products contain unhealthy ingredients such as artificial sweeteners and preservatives. They often don’t provide the same nutritional benefits as real, unprocessed food. In some circumstances they can cause digestive problems, along with a number of other side effects. If you’re looking to lose weight in a healthy way, focus on making dietary and lifestyle changes that you can stick with long-term. And always consult with your doctor before starting any new diet or fitness programme.
Our Top FAQs: No More Diet Shakes or Bars
Answer: Meal replacement shakes and diet bars gained popularity due to their perceived hyper-convenience. Advertisements positioned them as quick and easy solutions for those with busy lifestyles, offering the promise of weight loss without the hassle of traditional meal preparation.
Answer: The shift is driven by a growing awareness that sustainable weight loss requires a balanced, science-based approach. The focus is now on adopting healthy, whole and unprocessed foods, rather than relying on heavily processed meal replacement products that may lack essential nutrients.
Answer: Meal replacement products often lack whole foods and essential nutrients due to their extended shelf life requirements. The heavy processing involved diminishes nutrient absorption and healthy digestion, making them less appealing for those seeking a balanced diet.
Answer: Meal replacement products do not fit well into social contexts, making them socially non-inclusive. Their lack of compatibility with social life contributes to their unsustainability as a long-term weight-loss regime.
Answer: Meal replacement products lack the nuanced flavour profile, visual appeal, and aromatic experience of real, cooked meals. The absence of sensory satisfaction may lead to a higher likelihood of you falling off a healthy eating plan and reaching for unhealthy, highly-processed options.
Answer: Psychological solutions like the Gastric Mind Band and My Weigh Less treatment offer a science-backed approach to weight loss, incorporating clinical hypnosis and unique versions of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TCBT). These interventions focus on changing a person’s relationship with food and their eating habits, which achieves long-term results rather than quick fixes.
Answer: There is no magic fix for weight loss. Diet shakes may seem like a quick solution, but they are not sustainable or healthy for permanent weight loss. Many contain unhealthy ingredients, lack nutritional benefits, and may lead to digestive problems and other side effects.
Answer: For healthy weight loss, the article recommends focusing on making long-term dietary and lifestyle changes rather than relying on temporary fixes like meal replacement products. This approach emphasises the importance of real, unprocessed food for sustained and healthy weight management.

Our psychology-focused weight-loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’ for those wishing to lose weight. The programme incorporates an updated version of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, TCBT, which is the subject of our bestselling book, published globally by Hay House. Professor Windy Dryden of Goldsmiths University in London endorsed the book, and Professor Philip Zimbardo of Stanford University in the USA wrote the foreword. We also incorporate the latest developments around Neuroplasticity and Neuro-Linguistic Programming along with many other disciplines. One component of our psychology-focused weight-loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’.
Just think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”? The result: imagine you are out having dinner with friends ordering a burger. Instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you ‘want’ fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you ‘need’ fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. Later, maybe the waiter says, do you ‘want’ another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you ‘need’ another glass of wine. You can watch an animated video explaining ‘Want and Need’ and how it works at the bottom of this page.
Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when was the last time you ate in response to actual, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…
