What are the secrets of fast weight loss? How Fast Can I Lose Weight? are the most common questions that people ask us. It’s probably the most common question in the weight-loss industry. Sadly, many people will sign up for whichever weight-loss regime tempts them. So, they fall for the promise of achieving the fastest weight-loss results. Surprisingly, they are not that interested in how safe it is. Also, sometimes they are not that bothered about the cost, just the short-term results. “As long as I look good on the beach in Ibiza” is the normal comment. Weight loss, in all honesty, is not rocket science: anyone can do it by themselves, but short-term results are seldom the right option to choose.
If you type ‘How Fast Can I Lose Weight’ into any search engine, you will see literally thousands of results. But, if you filter them down and omit the wacky “lose 15 pounds in a week” scams, you will realise that two pounds per week is an acceptable average. Everyone undertaking a serious diet will potentially see a faster level of weight loss in the first few weeks. The reason for the higher weight loss in the early days is normally down to what is termed ‘water weight’. If a person is following a strict low carbohydrate diet, the initial weight loss could be in the region of ten pounds in the first fourteen days.
The main reason dieters can lose so much weight in the initial period of a diet – in particular, if they have chosen to follow a low-carb diet, is because they are burning their body’s stores of glycogen and not replacing them. From a psychological perspective, this is normally very motivational for the new dieter. They jump on the scales and see very rapid weight loss results in the first week or two. But this will slow down, of course…it will level out, and the weight loss will revert back to around two pounds per week.
When you get on the scales after a very committed week of dieting, you can feel disappointed at only losing around two pounds. But when we show people just what two pounds of fat looks and feels like, their reaction is often one of surprise. The image below is of one pound of simulated body fat. So, to lose two of those, the weight of a bag of sugar, is a very positive result. It is usually the case that to drop a clothes size requires a weight loss of around twelve pounds. Therefore, a committed dieter will potentially see the first clothes size drop in around three weeks. After the initial loss, then they can expect a drop in size every six weeks.
