‘The No Diet, Diet.’
Martin’s Easy Weight Loss
Easy Weight Loss. OK, let me be honest and upfront with you. Weight loss is never going to be easy. Especially if you’re a novice and not 100 per cent sure of precisely what you’re doing. If no one has shared with you the proven techniques and approaches that the professionals use, then it may well be a long, hard slog. And, at times, it may also be a little depressing. There are no magic shortcuts. However, when you arrive, as you will, at your target weight, I can tell you from first-hand experience the feelings and the emotions that you will experience may well be life-changing. The photo above (very embarrassed to include it on this page) was my starting point. The one below was taken just before I reached my target weight. I had lost 84 pounds.
As most seasoned dieters already know, losing weight is not a ‘walk in the park’. If it were, the world would be a slimmer, healthier, and far happier place. But by having the right inside knowledge and with a few tricks up your sleeve, you can arrive at your target weight without losing your mind. On the 100-plus blog pages on this site, you will find details of just about every trick in the book regarding permanent weight loss.
On this page, I am going to share with you a few proven techniques to help you. But first, I need you to have a little faith in me. If I were you, right now, I guess I would be thinking: what does he know? Why waste my time reading this page? And I completely understand. If I were in your shoes right now, I would be thinking exactly the same. So, let me just take two minutes to try and overcome those thoughts. Firstly the two photos above were both verified and featured in the national press. My full weight loss, verified case history and a selection of before and after photos, also verified appear in the success stories section of this website.
Easy Weight Loss
I suffered from obesity for fifty years, and then I was enrolled as the official number two trial candidate for the Gastric Mind Band, a psychology-focused weight loss programme that was back in 2008. During the following ten months, I went on to lose 84 pounds and reached my target weight. However, I was not the biggest loser. Sarah Hart went on to lose over 140 pounds or half her body weight. Her photo is below. She has appeared on TV around the world to talk about our programme.
Since then, along with Marion, I have amassed 15,000 1:1 clinical treatment hours, working with obese and overweight clients. This has resulted in us being classed as specialists in our field. Our weight loss programme is often referred to as the ‘Gold Standard’ in non surgical weight loss. We are honoured to have been invited to present our work at several university-based psychology conferences, each interested in learning about our unique weight loss treatment. We have co-authored two best-selling books on the subject, both published by the largest Mind-Body publisher in the world, Hay House in New York. And, as you can read on other pages of this website, we have appeared on TV on both sides of the Atlantic.
As I said earlier, I lost 85 pounds following our programme. But in my mind, at least, I never actually went on a diet. And I never once deprived myself of anything that I wanted to eat. As we progressed, our unique approach to weight loss received media attention around the world. Details of our work and the publication of the books appeared in over a hundred magazines, including Vogue, Marie Claire and Hello. that have featured our work. The publicity resulted in us having an eight-month waiting list, with clients flying literally from around the world to complete the programme.
As I said, I was obese for 50 years, so why was that? I think there were a couple of reasons. Firstly, like you, I live in an ‘obesogenic society’. This makes it hard, some would say almost impossible, to maintain a healthy weight. Just to confirm, an obesogenic society is basically one where there is an unlimited availability of energy-dense food (which is mostly junk food). But, at the same time, people are almost being encouraged, even limited as to the amount of physical activity they can complete. The photo below was taken on holiday after reaching my target weight.
As an example of an obesogenic society, no one gets off their backsides to change the TV channel anymore; they simply reach for the remote control. It’s a very small example, but it is very real. It’s like a ‘perfect storm’ scenario, perfectly emulating the old saying “too much in, not enough out”. It is hard to argue against it. They say that the pandemic of obesity that is literally sweeping around the world is nothing more than a simple supply error. The level of energy being consumed is in excess to the amount being burned. It is, they say, a ‘simple energy imbalance’. It’s a little simplistic, maybe, but it does contain an element of truth.

Whilst it is not an excuse, the diet industry also played a part in me being obese. The weight loss industry is, in my opinion, at least totally unique. It is an industry that continues to grow year on year, and the current estimated annual value is an astounding $288 billion! Why do I say unique? Because it grows by millions of dollars every year and simultaneously fails just about every one of its customers every year, it has done so since its conception. It is a well-proven fact that in excess of 98 per cent of diets fail, whilst, of course, they become wealthier. Of course, until now, no one in the industry has been that keen to ‘Kill the Golden Goose!’ so to speak. But then again, why would they?
The other reason I think I was obese was because I honestly think I was a ‘food addict’. There has been growing interest in the media recently around food addiction. Personally, I think it exists. And its effects are far larger than cocaine, for example. Take a look at the level of mortality from both, and you will note that food addiction (obesity) is a thousand times higher.
Easy Weight Loss
In a similar way to cocaine, heroin and other addictive substances, foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugars trigger the release of positive feel-good chemicals in the brain, similar to dopamine. Just like those using drugs, after a person has experienced the highly pleasurable feeling of consuming energy-dense foods, the brain starts to crave more. As a result, the person can rapidly become addicted. On this website, you can read a dedicated page, ‘Help Me to Stop Eating’ by following this link.
So how did I, and many others on this website, lose weight permanently? I have thought about that a lot over the last few days while writing this page. I believe there were, and are, three key components. And when you have mastered them, it will make the difference between your success and failure.
I know from experience that a number of readers will disregard or maybe have their own opinions. That, of course, is their right. However, my beliefs around permanent weight loss are based on considerable research and, as I have already said, on over 15,000 1:1 clinical treatment hours working exclusively with overweight clients. But, the three components around my approach to weight loss are firmly based not just on my personal experience but on that of hundreds of past clients. Hello, Magazine below featured our work.
Here we go, in no particular order. Motivation, maybe not in the way you think. I am talking about how important it is for you, your life, and maybe your family that you reach your target weight. You see, as an example, if your target weight loss is 40 pounds, then there is no medical or scientific reason why you cannot be 40 pounds lighter in around 20 weeks from today. It is a fact you may like to argue against, but in a court of law, for example, you would lose every single time.
You can choose today to start on your 20-week journey to a 40-pound weight loss, or you can go out with friends tonight and enjoy a burger and fries, maybe accompanied by a couple of cold beers. The choice, of course, is entirely yours. Sadly, you cannot have both. And I guess that is why I describe it as motivation. It is down to whatever you are motivated to achieve. The pleasant experience of eating the burger and fries, of course, will last for around seven minutes after you have finished. In contrast, the pleasure of going on a beach holiday this summer may last a lifetime. Your choice…
On the My Weigh Less course, we spend a lot of time on a mental exercise that has helped hundreds of people. It’s called ‘Going There First’. I used it on myself on a daily basis. We show the client how to see and experience the end of the weight loss journey… before they even start; it sounds weird, right…Easy Weight Loss.
So, let me try to explain how it works with a weight loss client. At the clinic (don’t worry, you will be able to do this just as quickly at home), I start by asking the clients to sit down. They then need to get themselves in a comfortable position, relax and then, if they are happy to do so, close their eyes. This is not hypnotherapy; I just need the client to be in a ‘hyper’ relaxed state.
So, our imaginary client, let’s say her name is Sally, wants to lose 40 pounds. “Sally, now you are relaxed; I just want you to feel all the stress leaving your body. I want you to really enjoy the feeling of being stress-free and super chilled. And let’s just stay there for a few minutes because we are not in any hurry.”
“Now Sally, I want you to allow your mind to just drift away, and slowly, in your own time, I want you to imagine you have a “crystal ball” so you can see yourself 20 weeks from today. Take a long, slow look at yourself; you are now at your target weight. Wow! Do you feel good? How is your new, enhanced self-confidence, your energy, your vitality..?”
“Enjoy being there and receiving all the positive comments from family and friends. Did you have to buy new clothes? Can you see what you are wearing? And what about jewellery and perfume…?” You can stay in that beautiful place for a few minutes if you wish. So now, I want you to start walking backwards in time, very slowly. Each step back represents one week, so take special care to see the steps and the route you had taken to arrive at the 40-pound weight loss”.
“So Sally, now you are back today, you can open your eyes.” I would then explain to the client that now they have mentally been there, to the endpoint, the finish line. They know, at a cognitive level, the steps they took, and they know it is both possible and painless. The benefit the client obtains from the miracle question is twofold. Firstly, they obtain a level of belief that the desired result is, in fact, possible. Secondly, they will see the process of change slowly play out in front of them over the imaginary 20 weeks.
PBT, our upgraded version of the traditional Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, is invaluable as an aid to helping you to stop and think about the consequences of the action you are about to take. It allows you to ‘freeze time’, to take a moment ‘out’ and really consider where you want this to go. Everything in our lives is going at record speed; we seldom take a few seconds to think through our planned actions.
Forgetting about food for a moment, how many people have sent a text in a heartbeat without thinking and then regretted it? PBT, as an example, will allow you just to stop and ask the question: Do I really need this burger, or do I just want it? Then, you make your choice and move on.
Easy Weight Loss
Whilst I was on my weight-loss journey, to ensure it was 100 per cent sustainable, I chose to eat whatever I wanted whenever I wanted it. There were zero restrictions, except that the quantities were in moderation. I was eating for taste, quality and pleasure, never to feel stuffed. Nothing was off limits, but the portions were controlled. Of course, it is fair to say that when looking at a menu in a restaurant, I would take a few private seconds to think through where I wanted to be tomorrow.
Bringing everything together, I invested a few minutes every day, picturing myself at my target weight. I forced myself to really imagine and feel the increased confidence and energy. I used Pause Button Therapy to buy myself a few minutes to consider the consequences of what I was about to do. So, regardless of whether we were eating at home or going out to a restaurant with friends, I ordered whatever took my fancy, but my portions were reduced.
I can guarantee that after a while, I am sure my stomach shrank because I became fuller, on much less food. The key to successful weight loss is to never deprive yourself of what you desire. There is a belief in psychology that the word Diet equals Deprivation, and as we know, Deprivation always equals an elevated level of Desire. Sure, you can deprive yourself for a while, but eventually, when your guard is down, you will fail.
One of the problems that people experience when trying to lose weight is that, as a species, we generally seek immediate gratification- meaning if there was a burger and fries in front of us right now. You can see it, you can smell it, you want it, and you want it now; that is pretty normal. The intense desire for instant gratification is one of the main reasons that so many people struggle with their weight. The opposite side of the coin, the delayed gratification element, where you have to wait 20 weeks until you have achieved the desired 40-pound weight loss, is somehow almost out of view, it has disappeared beyond the horizon.
Achieving fast and easy weight loss will always be based on making mindful dietary changes and adopting a few healthy lifestyle practices. While exercise is beneficial for overall health, it seldom produces the desired results. So, be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overeating. Using smaller plates and bowls always produces surprising results. We know that drinking water before meals can help reduce appetite and prevent overeating.
Make sure you replace sugary drinks with water, herbal tea, or coffee. Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues. Eat slowly, savour each bite, and avoid distractions while eating. Always eat when hungry, not when you’re bored, tired or feeling depressed. It is vital that you prioritise quality sleep, as poor sleep will affect hormones that regulate appetite and cravings. Eating in restaurants can often be a recipe for disaster. Cooking at home allows you to control ingredients and portions. Homemade meals tend to be healthier. Consistency is key. Small, sustainable changes over time are more effective than drastic measures.

Our psychology-focused weight-loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’ for those wishing to lose weight. The programme incorporates an updated version of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, TCBT, which is the subject of our bestselling book, published globally by Hay House. Professor Windy Dryden of Goldsmiths University in London endorsed the book, and Professor Philip Zimbardo of Stanford University in the USA wrote the foreword. We also incorporate the latest developments around Neuroplasticity and Neuro-Linguistic Programming along with many other disciplines. One component of our psychology-focused weight-loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’.
Just think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”? The result: imagine you are out having dinner with friends ordering a burger. Instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you ‘want’ fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you ‘need’ fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. Later, maybe the waiter says, do you ‘want’ another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you ‘need’ another glass of wine. You can watch an animated video explaining ‘Want and Need’ and how it works at the bottom of this page.
Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when was the last time you ate in response to actual, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…
