Diet By Numbers
Award-Winning Weight-Loss Treatment
‘The No Diet, Diet.’
Does this Work?
Diet By Numbers
Give It A Number
Diet By Numbers. This may be a very short page, it is to be honest a very simple, and you may initially think an unusual weight loss intervention, but I guarantee it will help those people reading this who really want to lose weight. So stick with it, you only need to give it five minutes.
Diet By Numbers
It’s all about putting a number on it, or assigning a value to a situation, or event. I understand if you think it sounds a little weird, but stay with me, and give it a go. If you have a spare minute to drop me an email, I would be interested to hear how you found the approach. Regardless of whether your thoughts are positive or negative, drop me an email. There’s a contact link at the bottom of the page.
So firstly, for this technique to work you must incorporate it into our upgraded version of CBT, Pause Button Therapy. You can, if you wish, read a dedicated page about PBT on this site. But all you need to know for now is that PBT is all about consequences, and delaying your decision making. The therapy asks you to accept that everything you do, say, or think in life has a consequence. You may not like it, but it is a fact.
Pizza and Red Wine
To make this as effortless as possible, you need to adopt the main principle of PBT. That is based around you mentally having a remote control in your pocket. One that you can press at any time and pause, or freeze time. So, as an example, someone says to you: “Hi Sue! Do you fancy coming out for a pizza and bottle of wine?”. But what if you are on a diet, trying to lose weight for you upcoming holiday to Ibiza…?
Pizza or Ibiza
Being able to press pause and take maybe just a few seconds to think about the consequences of the answer you are about to give, allows you to consider if saying yes will take you closer to, or further away from, your goals. So press pause, and think for a minute, then reply with your decision.
Diet By Numbers
If I was ever caught out by someone, asking me a question, to buy myself a few seconds, I used to tell a little white lie. So, I would tell them that I just needed to answer a quick text message. “Give me two minutes…” Then, whilst I just sat and looked at a blank screen, I used the time to consider my options, and what was going to be the best outcome for me long term.
Think of the Consequences
Anyway, back to the “Give it a Number” conversation. It is simple, but something that worked so well for me. All you need to do is convert issues and experiences around food and drink into a number value. What am I talking about, I can almost hear you saying!
Let me use a very real and current example. We are going on a ten-day holiday to Dubrovnik in eight weeks’ time. In a perfect world, I would really like to lose all, or most of, my ‘Covid’ weight gain before we go. It is our first holiday since the ‘lockdown and Covid situation’, so, to be honest, I am really looking forward to going, it’s been a while…
Diet By Numbers
So let me put a number, a value, on the thought of getting on the aircraft on day one, at my target weight. How good that would feel! I can think about what clothes I am going to pack. Also about what new clothes I want to buy to take with me. We can, and do, think about the weather, the beach, the cocktail bar. Along with all the other positive thoughts and emotions that float to the surface, of course, whenever I find myself daydreaming about the planned trip.
So, what number from 1 to 10 would I put on it? How important is it to me? How good do I think the experience will be? In all honesty I am going to give it a 10.
Diet By Numbers
Now, if a friend asked us to go out tonight, maybe to an Italian restaurant for fresh pizza and a bottle of red wine, I would just stop, take a breath, and put a number on it. The thought of going out, to be honest, is appealing. However, I would rate the food, the experience, and the effect on my soon to arrive holiday, and give it a score, a number. So, if it was higher than a 9.5, then I would go, but if not, I would decline. I give everything a value; a piece of chocolate, a sandwich, a glass of wine… Everything goes through my ‘number cruncher’, after which I make my decision.
Where does it go wrong? The answer is ‘Instant vs Delayed Gratification’. We want everything now, not tomorrow, and that is a major problem for those wishing to lose weight.
You see the pleasure from the offered evening of pizza and red wine would be almost instant, right now, tonight; I can almost taste it. But in contrast, the pleasure of walking through the airport at my target weight, however good that feeling would be, is a full eight weeks away. So, is it pleasure now, instant gratification, that wins your vote? Or do you wait until later, so you can enjoy the delayed gratification instead? You need to make a choice, because the reality is that you probably can’t have both!
Diet By Numbers
It’s not easy, because our brains are almost hard-wired to go for the instant pleasure. It’s a bit like that often-quoted, old phrase, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”. Except, of course, in this case it is not true. The pleasure you would experience from the dopamine flooding around the brain from the pizza and wine would last for a very short period of time, maybe less than an hour. In contrast, the pleasure of arriving at your target weight may last as long as a lifetime.
Diet By Numbers
I remember being on a course once when it was presented differently. If you asked a 25-year-old person to stop smoking, telling them they could add years on to their life if they did so, what would you expect the response to be? Something like: “What! Give up smoking now, to gain a few years in 40 years’ time; it’s not worth it”. Ask a man of 65, with terminal cancer, what he would do to receive twelve more healthy months to enjoy with his family and friends, he would tell you: “Absolutely anything!!!” Instant versus delayed gratification in a nutshell.

Below we re-confirm three tips for dieters that everyone should be following. You may find the dedicated Think Before You Eat page interesting.
Tip No. 1 – Only Eat When You’re Hungry!
This has to be our number one, golden rule, when it comes to achieving successful weight loss. In our experience, most overweight people eat for many different reasons, other than physical hunger. But, if you allow your emotions to control your eating habits, then it is unlikely that you will be able to control your weight as a result. So, before you reach for anything to eat, stop and ask yourself first if you physically NEED to eat, or you just WANT to…
Tip No. 2 – Use a Smaller Plate!
You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. Remember the famous Delboeuf optical illusion, because a small portion of food looks more generous when served on a smaller size plate. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.
Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!
Reduce Your Calorie Intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, consumed, on average, around 20% less food than previously. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.
Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!
A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!
Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!
It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.
Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!
You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”!
Diet By Numbers
However, our advice is to eat your favourite things first. Not only will you enjoy it more, but it’s also much easier to stop when you’ve eaten just the right amount and leave the rest on the plate. We have a new page you may find interesting, Slim And Beach Ready.

Kay successfully reversed her Type 2 Diabetes
Some clients simply want to shed their excess weight to look better, however others tell us that health is the main reason. Many of our past clients have successfully reversed medical conditions such as insulin resistance, diabetes, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease, whereas others have managed to avoid having knee, or hip replacement surgery. Psychologies Magazine published an article about Martin and Marion Shirran and their weight loss treatment. You can read a Blog post on Treating Diabetes. Vogue Magazine also featured Martin and Marion’s work.
New Downloadable Weight Loss Treatment
The Shirrans’ weight loss approach has been the subject of continued research and development over the last fifteen years. Their youngest client was just fourteen, and the oldest, eighty-six. Some clients wished to lose just a few pounds to fit into their wedding dress. But others, like Sharon, pictured below, went on to lose over 75 pounds. You can read her full story on the Success Stories Pages. The My Weigh Less Treatment has been designed to help men just as much as women, and you can read a dedicated page about Weight Loss For Men Here.
Treatment Based on Proven Science
The psychological approach incorporates Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Clinical Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). It also includes the Shirrans’ own Life Architecture Therapy, along with TCBT, their own upgraded version of CBT, which is the subject of their bestselling book, published globally by Hay House. Professor Windy Dryden, of Goldsmiths University in London, endorsed their book and Professor Philip Zimbardo, of Stanford University in the USA, wrote the foreword. Marie Claire have also featured Martin and Marion’s work.
Overweight People are not Lazy
Being overweight, having an unhealthy relationship with food, is predominantly a psychological issue. So, it’s a learned behaviour, because people are not born obese. But people are rarely overweight because they are lazy, or lacking in willpower; the issue goes much deeper. As a result, they simply need a ‘Psychological Reset.’ Alison, photo below, lost 70 pounds with Martin and Marion’s treatment.
Award-Winning Downloadable Treatment
Many clients tell us that they can’t remember the last time they ate in response to real, physical hunger. We will help you
We will also help you to make simple changes in your other thought processes… How much better could your relationship with food be, if we taught your subconscious mind how to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”? For example, instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you want fries with that?” without thinking you process the question as: “Do you need fries with that?” You can watch a short animated video explaining Want and Need at the bottom of this page.
