The story goes that the cake was served to him in the gardens of 10 Downing Street, during the Covid Lockdown. Another reason for the interest in ‘Cake’ is the highly popular television show titled Great British Bake Off. Apparently, for reasons that many people cannot understand, it has achieved incredible viewing figures. Its international reach now stretches to 200 territories around the world. Also, Google confirm that the biggest global search term around cakes is for ‘Cup Cake Recipes’.
Cake Burns Calories
You can eat cake and lose weight. What? How is that possible? Well, your body actually burns around 5 – 15% of the “cake calories” you consume in the digestion process. Great news, you might think! Don’t get too excited, however, because when you eat protein for example, instead of sugar, your body will use up far more calories (between 20-30% of whatever you consume) just breaking it down and metabolising it. Of course, this is called the “thermic effect of food”, or TEF.

Eating cake is usually associated with indulging in something delicious. Even from our childhood, cake was something that we were given as a treat. On your birthday you had a special cake with candles. On your wedding day the special multi-tier cake is always centre stage. The traditional day for making the Christmas pudding even has a day named after it in the diary. It’s known as “Stir Up Sunday”, which is traditionally the last Sunday before advent. And every keen baker knows that the earlier you make your Christmas cake, the better it will be. Mary Berry suggests allowing 2-3 months for the cake to absorb the alcohol-soaked fruit enough to make it as moist as possible!

If you want to lose weight and you love cake, the best thing to do is to become hyper aware of your actions and strictly limit the amount you consume. You can still indulge yourself whilst following a diet, but doing so requires self-control and moderation. Eating anything sweet in controlled amounts will allow you to ‘Have Your Cake and Eat It’, without sabotaging your diet. At our weight loss clinic we actively encourage our clients to ‘Have a Bit of what You Fancy’ once a week. At a cognitive level, this will ensure that your diet is sustainable. But do tread carefully, because for the dieter, anything sweet will pique their interest. Sugar is like cocaine, super addictive.

In his book, “Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us“, Michael Moss details how the processed food industry uses prodigious amounts of salt, sugar and fat in foods and beverages.They do it very intentionally, to get the hook in, to addict consumers. So, itโs similar to drug dealers reallyโฆonce you start, you cannot stopโฆ, you’re not weak willed. Itโs scientifically engineered that wayโฆ.

Sugar is not just in cakes of course, it is so good at disguise. You will find plentiful amounts hiding undercover. As an example, itโs hiding away in bread, and fruit. Think about pasta, potatoes, and many root vegetables. Have you ever wondered why fried onions smell and taste so goodโฆ? Well, itโs all down to sugarโฆas they are fried they caramelise! Sugar encourages the release of the hunger hormone Ghrelin. Do you ever find yourself at the end of a bar of chocolate thinking: โWhy did I eat all that?โ Itโs OK; it really wasnโt your fault. It is a very highly addictive substance. Within just a few minutes of eating any carbohydrate/sugar, the Ghrelin will be coursing through your veins. At that point, of course, you are no longer calling the shotsโฆit is literally out of your control.

You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. Remember the famous Delboeuf optical illusion, because a small portion of food looks more generous when served on a smaller size plate. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.
Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!
Reduce Your Calorie Intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, consumed, on average, around 20% less food than previously. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.
Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!
A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!
Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!
It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.
Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!
You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”!
However, our advice is to eat your favourite things first. Not only will you enjoy it more, but it’s also much easier to stop when you’ve eaten just the right amount and leave the rest on the plate.
