Yes, you Can Eat Cake Get Thin. It became the subject of a Global Media Frenzy, it was all about Boris and the Birthday Cake that apparently his wife Carrie bought for him. The story goes that the cake was served to him in the gardens of 10 Downing Street during the COVID lockdown. Another reason for the interest in ‘Cake’ is the highly popular television show titled Great British Bake Off. Apparently, for reasons that many people cannot understand, it has achieved incredible viewing figures. Its international reach now stretches to 200 territories around the world. Also, Google confirms that the biggest global search term around cakes is ‘Cup Cake Recipes’.

You can eat cake and lose weight. What? How is that possible? Well, your body actually burns around 5 – 15% of the “cake calories” you consume in the digestion process. Great news, you might think! Don’t get too excited, however, because when you eat protein, for example, instead of sugar, your body will use up far more calories (between 20-30% of whatever you consume), just breaking it down and metabolising it. Of course, this is called the “thermic effect of food”, or TEF.

Eating cake is usually associated with indulging in something delicious. Even from our childhood, cake was something that we were given as a treat. On your birthday you had a special cake with candles. On your wedding day the special multi-tier cake is always centre stage. The traditional day for making the Christmas pudding even has a day named after it in the diary. It’s known as “Stir Up Sunday”, which is traditionally the last Sunday before advent. And every keen baker knows that the earlier you make your Christmas cake, the better it will be. Mary Berry suggests allowing 2-3 months for the cake to absorb the alcohol-soaked fruit enough to make it as moist as possible!

can you eat chocolate and still lose weight

If you want to lose weight and you love cake, the best thing to do is to become hyper-aware of your actions and strictly limit the amount you consume. You can still indulge yourself whilst following a diet but doing so requires self-control and moderation. Eating anything sweet in controlled amounts will allow you to ‘Have Your Cake and Eat It’ without sabotaging your diet. During our weight loss programme, we actively encourage our clients to ‘Have a Bit of What You Fancy’ once a week. At a cognitive level, this will ensure that your diet is sustainable. But do tread carefully because, for the dieter, anything sweet will pique their interest. Sugar is, like cocaine, super addictive.

Why? Because when you add Sugar with Fat and Salt, you have the three components of processed food that drive cravings in our brains like nothing else. In his book, “Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us”, Michael Moss details how the processed food industry uses prodigious amounts of salt, sugar and fat in foods and beverages. They do it very intentionally to get the hook in, to addict consumers. So, it’s similar to drug dealers, really…once you start, you cannot stop… you’re not weak-willed. It’s scientifically engineered that way….

Sugar is not just in cakes, of course; it is so good at disguise. You will find plentiful amounts hiding undercover. As an example, it’s hiding away in bread and fruit. Think about pasta, potatoes, and many root vegetables. Have you ever wondered why fried onions smell and taste so good…? Well, it’s all down to sugar…as they are fried, they caramelise! Sugar rots your teeth and is as addictive as either cocaine or morphine. And yet we carry on…

Sugar encourages the release of the hunger hormone Ghrelin. Do you ever find yourself at the end of a bar of chocolate thinking: “Why did I eat all that?” It’s OK; it really wasn’t your fault. It is a very highly addictive substance. Within just a few minutes of eating any carbohydrate/sugar, the Ghrelin will be coursing through your veins. At that point, of course, you are no longer calling the shots…it is literally out of your control.

Conclusion

Indulging in cake while successfully managing your weight may sound contradictory, but understanding the science behind it can shed light on how to enjoy your favourite treats without derailing your diet. First, it’s essential to address the misconception that all calories are equal. While it’s true that your body expends energy in the digestion process, the type of calories you consume matters.

The sweetness of cake has been a delightful indulgence throughout human history. From birthday celebrations to wedding ceremonies, the cake has been a symbol of joy and festivity. However, the impact of sugar, especially when combined with fat and salt, can be akin to addictive substances like cocaine. The processed food industry intentionally formulates products with these three components to create irresistible cravings. Eat Cake Get Thin.

Sugar, in particular, stimulates the release of the hunger hormone ghrelin, leaving individuals feeling out of control and susceptible to overconsumption. The addictive nature of sugar makes it challenging for many to resist its allure, leading to the notorious feeling of overindulging. While enjoying cake on a diet is possible, moderation and self-control are key. The goal is to have your cake and eat it, too, without compromising your dietary efforts. The “Eat Cake Get Thin” approach encourages individuals to indulge occasionally, emphasising the importance of balanced moderation. This not only makes the diet sustainable but also addresses the addictive qualities of sugar.

So you can indeed include cake in your diet while managing your weight, but it’s crucial to approach it with moderation. Understanding the science of how your body processes different nutrients and the addictive nature of sugar can empower you to make informed choices, enjoy your favourite treats responsibly, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. So, next time you savour a piece of cake, you can do so with a deeper understanding of the delicious science behind it.

One final point on ‘Cake’: it is possible that chocolate cake may prove to be even harder on your willpower control than other varieties. Chocolate is engineered to melt at body temperature. How clever is that! When chocolate melts in your mouth, it creates a smooth, full, coating sensation that most people agree is pleasant. It was engineered to do exactly that.

Let me give you a couple of examples: the programme will allow you to make a number of simple cognitive changes in your thought processes…small changes that deliver ‘massive results’. For example, think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”? The result, imagine you are out having dinner with friends, and after ordering a burger, instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you ‘want’ fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you ‘need’ fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. Later, maybe the waiter says, do you ‘want’ another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you ‘need’ another glass of wine. You can watch an animated video explaining ‘Want and Need’ and how it works at the bottom of this page.

Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when was the last time you ate in response to actual, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…
