Obesity Surgery NHS
Obesity Surgery NHS. After working with over a thousand people, each wishing to lose weight, the fascination and unquestionable belief that people appear to have in Bariatric Surgery never fails to amaze me. Bariatric Surgery, of course, refers to any surgical weight loss procedure, including Gastric Band, Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve etc. Whether it’s NHS weight loss surgery or going privately, most see it as the Holy Grail. For some reason, they believe that after they have chosen to go under the knife, all their problems will disappear.
Most dieters I have talked with think that both pre and post-surgery, zero effort is required on their part. For some reason, they also have a mistaken belief that the weight loss they expect is both guaranteed and will be permanent. They are also confident that it will not involve any medical risks. They believe that following their surgery, life can go back as it was before, minus the excess weight….Utopia…. But where does this totally incorrect thinking come from?
Obesity Surgery NHS
Having searched and read at length the top ten pages on Google providing in-depth information about both the NHS and private weight loss clinics, we know that at no point does it state that the patient is guaranteed to lose weight. Also, nowhere does it state that any weight loss achieved will be permanent. This makes me think that it is just wishful thinking on the dieter’s mind.
So, although people may perceive it that way, the connection with reality is slightly different. It is the same as the accepted and acknowledged medical risks of bariatric surgery. As an example, the published morbidity rate, that is, those that will die either on the operating table or in the following period, is 6%. (Jama Network US). So, in other words, six people in 100 will die! You can read an interesting page on why you should Say No to Weight Loss Surgery Here.
Many people understand and accept that overweight people face increased risks when given a general anaesthetic. A document published by the National Institute of Health in the US stated that of 6118 patients who underwent primary bariatric surgery, 18 patient deaths occurred within 30 days of the surgery. The most common cause of death was sepsis, 33% of deaths, followed by cardiac causes, 28% and pulmonary embolism, 17%. As the years following surgery progress, the mortality rate increases still further.
There is no Guarantee of Success with Bariatric Surgery.
Surgeons say that patients undertaking surgery may lose between 30 to 60 per cent of their excess weight over the initial 6-month period. An additional study shows that the patient can expect to maintain 50 – 60 per cent of that weight loss over the following years. So, as an example, a patient wishing to lose, say, 56 pounds, four stones, can undergo a reasonably risky surgical procedure and can expect to lose, in a worse case, around 18 pounds, best case 36 pounds.
Weight Regain
The ‘regain’ weight of 50 to 60 per cent would be in the region of 9 to 18 pounds. Weight regain, often described as weight creep, is the anticipated amount of weight returning following the initial post-surgery weight loss. So, in our example above, the result would be an initial weight loss of between 18 to 36 pounds. Weight regain is stated to be in the region of 9 to 18 pounds.
The Question
The surgery has a mortality rate of 6 per cent. The hospital has explained that you should expect to lose around 24 pounds of your excess weight. Additionally, they have made it clear that around 15 pounds may return in the following 24 months, leaving you with a net weight loss of around 9 pounds – and people are electing for the surgery…really…Obesity Surgery NHS
So, the medical risks associated with weight loss surgery are real; you should consider them carefully and discuss everything with your family. So how about the alternatives? If obesity and being overweight is a psychological issue, maybe that is the approach to take. There are a number of pages on this website where we (Martin and Marion Shirran) are described as specialists and experts in the field of weight loss. It is true that we have gained in excess of 15,000 1:1 clinical treatment hours in the weight loss arena.
The surgery for some people, and often their families, can be life-changing in a negative way. For example, some of the procedures are non-reversible: many will seriously impact on their lives going forward. For others, however, the surgery may not be successful, failing to deliver the hoped-for weight loss. With regard to current waiting times for surgery, unless your level of obesity is possibly life-threatening, following Covid, some regions are projecting a wait time in excess of two/three years.
In Conclusion
One of the first things medical students learn is never to treat the symptom; always treat the cause of an illness. It makes logical sense. Treat the primary cause of the patient’s pain, and the pain will cease to exist. But for some reason, in the area of obesity, we often disregard the rule. You see, it’s a fact that obesity is a psychological issue, not a physical one. Therefore, bariatric surgery is not necessarily the right solution. Obesity Surgery NHS
After years of working with individuals on their weight loss journeys, the pervasive belief in bariatric surgery as a miraculous solution never ceases to amaze. Bariatric surgery, which encompasses procedures like gastric band, gastric bypass, and gastric sleeves, is often viewed as the ultimate remedy, whether it’s through the NHS or private clinics. Many patients seem to believe that, once they undergo surgery, their weight problems will vanish, requiring no effort on their part. There’s a mistaken notion that weight loss is guaranteed and permanent, free from medical risks and that life will return to normal, minus the excess weight. But where does this misconception originate?
Exploring the top ten Google pages for comprehensive information on the NHS and private weight loss clinics, one thing becomes evident: nowhere does it state that weight loss is guaranteed or that it will be permanent. The notion that it will be easy is, it seems, a matter of wishful thinking. The reality is somewhat different, as with the acknowledged medical risks of bariatric surgery. For instance, the published mortality rate for these procedures is 6%, meaning six out of every 100 patients may not survive.
So, the question remains: despite the real medical risks, modest expected weight loss, and potential regain, why are people opting for surgery? It’s crucial to carefully consider these medical risks and discuss them with your family. Alternatives, such as psychological approaches to address obesity, should not be overlooked.
In conclusion, obesity is a psychological issue, not just a physical one, and treating the cause, not just the symptom is paramount. Bariatric surgery, while life-changing for some, can also have negative consequences and may not consistently deliver the desired outcomes. Therefore, it’s essential to weigh the risks and benefits of each approach carefully.
Our Top Faqs
Answer: Psychological considerations are crucial for bariatric surgery candidates. Pre-surgery assessments often include evaluating the patient’s mental health, coping mechanisms, and understanding of the surgery’s psychological impact. After surgery, individuals may experience changes in body image, self-esteem, and relationships. Post-operative counselling and support groups can help address psychological challenges. It’s essential for patients to be aware of the potential psychological aspects of their journey and seek professional assistance if needed. Obesity Surgery NHS.
Answer: Successful outcomes require significant lifestyle changes. Patients must adopt healthier eating habits, including portion control and mindful eating. Regular exercise is also encouraged to support weight loss and overall well-being. Furthermore, patients should commit to lifelong follow-up care, including vitamin and mineral supplementation. The surgery is a tool, but long-term success relies on the individual’s commitment to these lifestyle changes.
Answer: Yes, support systems are essential. Patients can benefit from pre-surgery counselling, support groups, and educational programs provided by healthcare institutions. Many patients find online communities and local support groups invaluable for sharing experiences and seeking advice. Engaging with these support systems can help patients navigate their bariatric surgery journey with the understanding and encouragement they need.
Answer: The long-term impact on mental health and self-esteem varies among individuals. While many experience improved self-esteem and mental well-being due to weight loss, some may face new challenges. Adjusting to a changing body image and managing relationships can be emotionally demanding. Counselling and support groups play a vital role in helping individuals maintain and improve their mental health and self-esteem throughout their post-surgery journey.
Answer: Bariatric surgery costs can be substantial. While health insurance may cover some of the expenses, patients often have out-of-pocket costs. In comparison, non-surgical weight loss methods may have lower upfront costs. However, the long-term financial impact of obesity-related health issues should also be considered. Patients should weigh both the immediate and long-term financial aspects when deciding on a weight loss approach.
Answer: Age is a factor in bariatric surgery decisions. While there isn’t a strict age limit, the risks and benefits may vary with age. Older adults may face additional health considerations and reduced benefits compared to younger patients. The decision to undergo surgery should be based on individual health status, overall goals, and consultation with healthcare providers.
Answer: Bariatric surgery can affect relationships. Some may experience positive changes, with increased self-confidence enhancing social interactions. However, changes in eating habits, body image, and lifestyle can strain relationships. Open communication and support from loved ones are vital for navigating these changes and maintaining healthy relationships.
Answer: Post-surgery dietary guidelines include gradual transitions from clear liquids to solid foods, with a focus on high-protein, low-calorie foods. Over time, patients can reintroduce a wider variety of foods, but portion control remains essential. These guidelines evolve to accommodate the patient’s progress, with regular follow-up appointments to assess dietary needs and possible adjustments. Patients should be prepared for lifelong dietary modifications and close monitoring of their nutritional status.

Our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’ for those wishing to lose weight. The programme incorporates an updated version of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, TCBT, which is the subject of our bestselling book, published globally by Hay House. Professor Windy Dryden of Goldsmiths University in London endorsed the book, and Professor Philip Zimbardo of Stanford University in the USA wrote the foreword. We also incorporate the latest developments around Neuroplasticity and Neuro-Linguistic Programming along with many other disciplines. One component of our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’. At this statement, ‘Psychological Reset,’ we have observed many people raising their eyebrows; see below.
Let me give you a couple of examples: the programme will allow you to make a number of simple cognitive changes in your thought processes…small changes that deliver ‘massive results’. For example, think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”? The result, imagine you are out having dinner with friends, and after ordering a burger, instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you ‘want’ fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you ‘need’ fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. Later, maybe the waiter says, do you ‘want’ another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you ‘need’ another glass of wine. You can watch an animated video explaining ‘Want and Need’ and how it works at the bottom of this page.
Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when was the last time you ate in response to actual, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…Obesity Surgery NHS
