In this blog post, we will discuss some of the most important benefits of chia seeds, as well as ways that you can add them into your diet. So why wait? Start eating chia seeds today!
Background history of chia seeds
Chia seeds are far from a modern discovery. On the contrary, they are an ancient superfood that has been cherished by cultures around the world for centuries. Originally native to Mexico and Central America, they were a staple food of the Aztecs and Mayans and were even used as currency. The Aztecs believed that chia seeds had many health benefits, including increased energy and stamina.
The word “chia” comes from the Nahuatl word meaning “strength,” and it was not uncommon for warrior tribes to consume chia seeds before going into battle. In recent years, chia seeds have experienced a resurgence in popularity due to their nutritional value. Thanks to their versatility and health benefits, chia seeds are here to stay.
The amazing range of nutrients in chia seeds
Chia seeds might look tiny and insignificant to the uninitiated, but they are an extremely nutrient-dense food. According to healthline.com, a single ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds contains 10 grams of fibre, 4.7 grams of protein, 185 mg of calcium, and a host of other vitamins and minerals.
Chia Seeds Health Benefits
Our bodies need fibre for digestive health, it promotes regularity and prevents constipation. And, just one single serving of 2 tablespoons of chia seeds provides an impressive 30% of our recommended daily intake of fibre! Additionally, chia seeds contain a massive 20% protein, which our body needs for tissue repair and growth.
Chia seeds contain a whole host of different nutrients
Chia seeds are also rich in vitamins, and minerals, including vitamin B1 and B3, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and copper. All of these nutrients play important roles in keeping our bodies healthy and functioning properly. For example, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium are important for improving bone mineral density and keeping your bones strong. Magnesium is also essential for muscle and nerve function, while zinc is necessary for immune system function and cell growth.
Chia seeds are also a great source of antioxidants, which help to protect our cells from damage. In fact, studies have found that the antioxidant activity of chia seeds is higher than any whole food, even blueberries! In addition, chia seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health. Chia seeds are one of the highest sources of plant-based omega acid, also known as Alpha-Linolenic Acid (AHA). With so many important nutrients, it’s no wonder that chia seeds have been called a superfood. You can also read our post: “The Best Food Sources of Omega-3”
Health benefits of chia seeds
Although they have already been consumed by humans for thousands of years, chia seeds have become a popular health food in recent years, and for good reason. These tiny seeds are packed with nutrients that can have a positive impact on your health. For example, chia seeds can help to improve cardiovascular health by reducing inflammation and regulating blood pressure. Studies have found that chia seed supplements reduced blood pressure in subjects suffering from hypertension.
Foods to help with weight loss
Chia seeds are 35% fibre and 20% protein, so they are also very satisfying and filling to eat. When we consume foods rich in these nutrients, we tend to eat less overall, which in turn can help promote weight loss. This is great news for dieters, of course! A 6-month, double-blind, randomised control trial with overweight and obese patients with type 2 diabetes found that those who took chia seed daily experienced significantly greater weight loss than those who were taking the placebo.
They can also help to balance blood sugar levels, making them a good choice for people with diabetes. In addition, chia seeds are high in calcium and other minerals that are essential for bone health. And finally, a 2021 review of 10 clinical trials found that chia seeds helped to improve cholesterol levels by promoting the production of HDL (good) cholesterol while reducing the levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides.
Ways to add chia seeds to your diet
Chia seeds have a mild, nutty flavour that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. They are a great example of foods to help with weight loss. Here are some easy ways to add chia seeds to your diet:
- Sprinkle them on top of yogurt or oatmeal
- Add them to salads or cooked veggies as a flavourful, nutritious topping.
- Stir them into soups or stews.
- Mix them into smoothies.
- Or you can use ground chia seeds as a flour substitute in muffins, breads, and other baked goods.

Possibly the most common chia seed creation these days is a chia pudding. Chia seeds are hydrophilic. This means they mix very easily with water, or other liquids, and can absorb up to 12 times their weight. They then swell up and become gelatinous. To make chia pudding, simply add the desired amount of seeds to a bowl or jar, add coconut or almond milk, stir and leave in the fridge for a few hours, or even overnight. Then enjoy as is, or top with berries or nuts for extra flavour and nutrition.
It’s delicious and nutritious too: the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as the saying goes!
The Bottom Line
If you’re looking to add more nutrients to your diet, chia seeds are a great option. They offer a host of potential health benefits, including cardiovascular support, blood sugar regulation, and improved cholesterol levels. They are also a good source of essential nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, making them beneficial for bone health. Additionally, chia seeds are a rich source of fibre, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids. And finally, don’t forget that including this nutritious superfood into a healthy diet will also potentially help you lose weight!

FAQ 1: How many chia seeds should I eat per day?
ANSWER: While there is no official recommended daily intake, most experts suggest eating one to two tablespoons (15-30 grams) of chia seeds per day. This amount is a good place to start if you’re looking to experience the health benefits of chia seeds.
FAQ 2: Do chia seeds have any side effects?
ANSWER: Chia seeds are generally considered safe to consume. However, some people may experience digestive issues like bloating and gas when they first start eating chia seeds, because of the high fibre content. If this happens, try reducing the amount of chia seeds you’re eating, or soaking them in water before consuming.

Additionally, chia seeds can interact with some medications, such as blood-thinning drugs, so it’s important to speak to your doctor before adding them to your diet if you’re taking any prescription drugs.
FAQ 3: Can I eat chia seeds if I’m allergic to nuts?
ANSWER: Yes, chia seeds are safe for people with nut allergies to eat. However, if you’re allergic to sesame seeds, chia seeds may also trigger an allergic reaction because of the potential cross-reactivity. If you’re unsure whether you’re allergic to chia seeds, it’s always best to speak to your doctor before adding them to your diet.

Below is a selection of weight-loss tips that everyone can start using straight away. And, if you enroll in the My Weigh Less Course, you will learn many more of our helpful tips and techniques about how to achieve successful, permanent weight loss.
Tip No. 1 – Only Eat When You’re Hungry!
This has to be our number one, golden rule, when it comes to achieving successful weight loss. In our experience, most overweight people eat for many different reasons, other than physical hunger. But, if you allow your emotions to control your eating habits, then it is unlikely that you will be able to control your weight as a result. So, before you reach for anything to eat, stop and ask yourself first if you physically NEED to eat, or you just WANT to…
Tip No. 2 – Use a Smaller Plate!
You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. No doubt you know about the power of optical illusions. But are you aware of just how much more generous the same size portion of food appears, when presented on a smaller plate, instead of a larger one? Have a look at the image below. It’s known as the Delboeuf optical illusion. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.
Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!
Reduce your calorie intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, on average, consumed around 20% less food compared with when they didn’t drink anything before they ate. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.
Tip No. 4 – Eat Slowly and Mindfully!
A growing number of studies have consistently found a correlation between speed of eating and weight, so it is officially accepted now that faster eaters are definitely more likely to become overweight. Studies have also shown that people are much more likely to eat more when their eating is mindless, as opposed to mindful. So, make meal times an occasion by sitting down at a table, with no distractions. Then eat slowly and savour every mouthful. You will naturally eat less food and also find it easier to lose weight as a result!
Tip No. 5 – Stay Away From Sugar and Highly Processed Foods!
It’s a fact that sugar and highly processed foods have addictive properties! So much so, that many people find that once they start eating these foods, they literally can’t stop. And, of course, if you’re making such poor food choices, this in turn will make it almost impossible for you to lose weight. So, our advice is to choose healthy, unprocessed foods and limit the amount of sugar you consume. As a result, you will have far more control over how much you eat and also how much weight you can lose.
Tip No. 6 – Eat Your Favourite Foods on the Plate First!
You may not be aware of how important this tip is, but the order in which you eat your food can actually have a big impact on how much you consume! It’s quite common for overweight people to “save the best til last” when eating. In other words they only eat their favourite food right at the end. It’s not so surprising then, that they also tend to eat everything on their plate, regardless of how uncomfortably full they feel. Because, of course, they don’t want to miss out on the “best bit”!
However, our advice is to eat your favourite things first. Not only will you enjoy it more, but it’s also much easier to stop when you’ve eaten just the right amount and leave the rest on the plate.
