A weight Loss Miracle. Marion and I have spent over 15 years working with people who wanted or needed to lose weight. Many who we saw were desperate for results. For some, it was all about vanity, for others it was for serious health reasons. Some just wanted to lose a few pounds to look good in their wedding dress, others like Sarah Hart, photo below went on to lose 140 pounds.
More a Technique than a Miracle
So who are we to talk about Miracles? As well as attending and presenting multiple obesity-related university presentations and training courses, I have read hundreds books on the subject of obesity. We have accumulated over 15,000 1:1 clinical treatment hours with our overweight clients. We are specialists in weight loss. So, let me share with you then, an unusual ‘Miracle’ intervention around ‘Permanent Weight Loss’.
My 85 pound Weight Loss, seemed like a Miracle
Initially let me mention the importance of achieving weight loss using psychology, rather than old-fashioned ‘dieting approaches’. When you succeed in changing your mindset around food and eating, then you will automatically start eating for different reasons, like hunger. As a result, your weight loss will be almost effortless. Obesity is the Symptom not the Cause
At every level of medical training the student is taught, ‘Always Treat the Cause, Never the Symptom’. Imagine visiting a doctor with a pain in your chest. The doctor told you “take an Aspirin, go home and rest. The pain will go soon”. So, you go home and have a heart attack.
What do you see when you observe a severely overweight person? The excess weight you observe is the symptom of their problem, or maybe the symptom of their illness. Therefore, taking them into an operating theatre and putting a rubber band around their stomach, or alternatively, cutting their stomach in half, is never going to be the correct way to permanently solve the problem. Diets Can Never Work
As with surgery, treating an obese person by placing them on a diet, will never deliver a permanent solution. Ask an overweight person the following questions. Do you eat when you are tired, sad, lonely, bored, depressed, or maybe to please someone else? I know what the answer will be, and you can probably guess as well.
Do You Ever East When You Are Hungry
So, those wishing to achieve Permanent Weight Loss must ask themselves the question. If I eat for any of those reasons, how would it even be possible for a diet to change that? The answer, of course, is that it will have zero effect, at least in the medium, or long-term. You may like to read about how you can increase your level of motivation.
A weight Loss Miracle
The Miracle of Weight Loss I want to share with you comes in some ways from the ‘Miracle Question’. The miracle question was originally developed by Insoo Kim Berg, so I’m told. The story goes that Insoo came up with the idea as she was responding to a client who said: “That would take a miracle!” when asked to describe her future life, without the problems that brought her to therapy.
The Miracle of Weight Loss
The question is used by psychologists to help the client envision the future when their problem is no longer present. I started using a sort of version of the Miracle Question with weight loss clients at our clinic. It often achieved amazing results.
Relax, close your eyes
So here we go. Firstly, I would ask the client, to sit back, relax, and close their eyes. This is not hypnosis, just deep relaxation. When doing this at home, be somewhere quite, somewhere warm, somewhere where you will not be disturbed. I would tell them to just spend a few minutes, longer if they wished, to allow their mind to clear.

As with you, I would tell them to think about nothing at all, just chill. Telling them to relax and almost let their thoughts just float away. When relaxed, I would ask them to see themselves at a time in the future, say six months’ time. I would ask them to look at themselves, on the beach, or somewhere else appropriate, at their target weight.
Just Enjoy Every Second
I would tell them to stay there for a while, enjoy the positive feelings of achieving their goal. To visualise in detail what clothes they were wearing, what perfume they had on. I asked them to feel the elevated level of confidence and energy achieved by losing their excess weight. To be aware of all the positive comments they are receiving from their friends and family.
I encouraged them to stay there and enjoy it for as long as they wished. Then, I would ask them to walk backwards in time. To walk very slowly, maybe a week at a time, 26 steps. I asked them to take their time, to see the weekly changes that they had made in their life. I told them to make a mental note of each one. When they finally arrived back at ‘Today’ I asked them to open their eyes.

“And so, Susan, now you have been there, you know exactly what to do. Now let’s get on with getting you started on your weight loss journey”. The client, of course, knew instinctively what steps she needed to take. Maybe, more importantly, she knew and understood the ‘Pay Off’ of every small change she made.

FAQ 1. Can I use this technique at home?

FAQ 2. How many times should I, or can I use it?
ANSWER: It is fine to use the technique just as often as you wish. We would use it at least twice with clients. If the journey, and the steps back are long, then it is fine to split it over two sessions.
FAQ 3. What if I fall asleep, whilst relaxing/day dreaming?
ANSWER: That would be perfect…It is a clear indication that you have reached a deep level of relaxation. Just repeat as you wish. You’ve probably heard this many times before, but it’s a fact that people who use larger plates tend to eat more food than those who eat from smaller plates. Remember the famous Delboeuf optical illusion, because a small portion of food looks more generous when served on a smaller size plate. If you stick to our mantra, “always go for quality over quantity”, then you will definitely lose weight much more easily.
Tip No. 3 – Drink a Glass or Two of Water Before Your Meal!
Reduce Your Calorie Intake by over 20%, with almost with no effort! Research results, published by Harvard Medical showed that people who drank two large glasses of water, just before eating, consumed, on average, around 20% less food than previously. This is possibly as a result of the stretching and fullness sensation in the stomach.
