A Weight Loss Miracle. Marion and I have spent over 15 years working with people who wanted or needed to lose weight. Many who we saw were desperate for results. For some, it was all about vanity; for others, it was for serious health reasons. Some just wanted to lose a few pounds to look good in their wedding dress; others, like Sarah Hart in the photo below, went on to lose 140 pounds.
More a Technique than a Miracle
So, who are we to talk about Miracles? As well as attending and presenting multiple obesity-related university presentations and training courses, I have read hundreds of books on the subject of obesity. I have appeared on TV on both sides of the Atlantic and co-authored two best-selling books on the subject of obesity. We have accumulated over 15,000 1:1 clinical treatment hours with our overweight clients. We are regarded as specialists in weight loss. On this blog page, I will share with you an unusual ‘Miracle’ intervention around ‘Permanent Weight Loss’.
Initially, let me mention the importance of achieving weight loss using psychology rather than traditional ‘dieting approaches’. When you succeed in changing your mindset around food and eating, then you will automatically start eating for different reasons, like hunger. As a result, your weight loss will be almost effortless.
One component of our psychology-focused weight loss programme provides a ‘Psychological Reset’ for those wishing to lose weight. At this statement, ‘Psychological Reset,’ I have observed many people raising their eyebrows. The programme incorporates an updated version of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, TCBT; we also incorporate the latest developments around Neuroplasticity and Neuro-Linguistic Programming along with many other disciplines.
Let me give you a couple of examples: the programme will allow you to make a number of simple cognitive changes in your thought processes…small changes that deliver ‘massive results’. For example, think for a moment how different your relationship with food and weight loss would be if we re-programmed your subconscious mind to effortlessly replace the word “want” with the word “need”? The result, imagine you are out having dinner with friends, and after ordering a burger, instead of hearing the waiter asking: “Do you want fries with that?” without thinking, you hear and automatically process the question as: “Do you need fries with that?” Things would be very different, right? You see, at a cognitive level, we process those words differently. A Weight Loss Miracle.
Later, maybe the waiter says, do you want another glass of wine? You, of course, hear and cognitively process the word stream as do you need another glass of wine. You can watch an animated video explaining ‘Want and Need’ and how it works at the bottom of this page.
Another ‘fix’ in the programme relates to just why people eat. So, during the programme, you will be asked when was the last time you ate in response to real, physical hunger. Most people say: “Thinking about it, I haven’t been physically hungry for years”. And so we ask them: “Do you ever eat when you are bored, stressed, tired, lonely, depressed, sad, to reward yourself, when watching TV, or maybe just to please someone else?” Then, we do another reset, and so it goes on…
At every level of medical training, the student is taught, ‘Always Treat the Cause, Never the Symptom’. Imagine visiting a doctor with a pain in your chest. The doctor told you, “Take an Aspirin, go home and rest. The pain will go away soon”. So, you go home and have a heart attack…
Treat the Cause
What do you see when you observe a severely overweight person? The excess weight you observe is the symptom of their problem or maybe the symptom of their illness. Therefore, taking them into an operating theatre and putting a rubber band around their stomach, or alternatively, cutting their stomach in half, is never going to be the correct way to solve the problem permanently. Read up on the subject of ‘weight regain or weight creep’ on this site following bariatric surgery for confirmation.
The same as surgery, treating an obese person by placing them on a diet (which is cognitively guaranteed to create an elevated level of desire because deprivation always does) will never, can never deliver a permanent solution. Ask an overweight person, are you depressed? That would be a good place to start.
A Weight Loss Miracle
The Miracle of Weight Loss I want to share with you comes in some ways from the ‘Miracle Question’. The miracle question was originally developed by Insoo Kim Berg, so I’m told. The story goes that Insoo came up with the idea as she was responding to a client who said: “That would take a miracle!” when asked to describe her future life without the problems that brought her to therapy.
The question is used by psychologists to help the client envision the future when their problem is no longer present. I started using a sort of version of the Miracle Question with weight loss clients at our clinic. It often achieved amazing results.
So here we go. Firstly, I would ask the client to sit back, relax, and close their eyes. This is not hypnosis, just deep relaxation. When doing this at home, be somewhere quiet, somewhere warm, somewhere where you will not be disturbed. I would tell them just to spend a few minutes, longer if they wished, to allow their mind to clear.
As with you, I would tell them to think about nothing at all, just chill. Telling them to relax and almost let their thoughts just float away. When relaxed, I would ask them to see themselves at a time in the future, say six months’ time. I would ask them to look at themselves, on the beach, or somewhere else appropriate, at their target weight.
Just Enjoy Every Second
I would tell them to stay there for a while and enjoy the positive feelings of achieving their goal. To visualise in detail what clothes they were wearing and what perfume they had on. I asked them to feel the elevated level of confidence and energy achieved by losing their excess weight. To be aware of all the positive comments they are receiving from their friends and family.
I encouraged them to stay there and enjoy it for as long as they wished. Then, I would ask them to walk backwards in time. To walk very slowly, maybe a week at a time, 26 steps. I asked them to take their time to see in reverse the weekly changes that they had made in their life. I ask them to make a mental note of each one. When they finally arrived back at ‘Today’, I asked them to open their eyes.
“And so, Susan, now you have been there and experienced all the feelings and emotions of being at your desired weight, you know exactly what to do. Now let’s get on with getting you started on your weight loss journey”. The client, of course, knew instinctively what steps she needed to take. Maybe, more importantly, she knew and understood the ‘Payoff’ of every small change she made.

Answer: The “Miracle Question” is a psychological tool that helps clients envision a future without their weight-related problems. By visualizing themselves at their target weight, they gain motivation and clarity about the steps they need to take to achieve their weight loss goals. A Weight Loss Miracle.
Answer: The process involves deep relaxation, where clients are encouraged to close their eyes, clear their minds, and visualize themselves at their target weight in the future. They are asked to enjoy the positive feelings, visualize their appearance, and feel the confidence and energy associated with their weight loss. Clients then gradually walk backwards in time, noting the changes they’ve made to reach their goals. This exercise helps them understand and commit to their weight loss journey.
Answer: Treating the underlying causes of excess weight, such as emotional issues or unhealthy habits, is more effective than simply addressing the symptom (excess weight) with extreme measures like surgery or strict diets. A holistic approach is necessary for a permanent solution.
Answer: Understanding why you eat, whether it’s due to boredom, stress, emotions, or other factors, is crucial in the weight loss process. The program helps individuals recognize and address these triggers to develop a healthier relationship with food.
Answer: Changing your subconscious response from “want” to “need” can influence your choices. For example, it shifts your perception of the question, “Do you want fries with that?” to “Do you need fries with that?” This can lead to healthier food choices.
Answer: The “Psychological Reset” is a component of the weight loss program that involves updating cognitive processes using techniques like Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Neuroplasticity, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. This reset includes making simple cognitive changes, like replacing “want” with “need,” to transform your approach to food.
Answer: Psychology-focused weight loss is essential because it helps you change your relationship with food and eating. When you alter your mindset, you’ll start eating for different reasons, like hunger making weight loss more manageable.
